Fixing a Squeaky Floor

    Hi guys,

I'm not sure if this is in the correct part of the forum so apologies if it isn't.

My partner and I are going through the motions of purchasing our first house. (second hand, built in '01-'02)

It will need new carpet on the stairs and landing but we have also noticed that the floor is a little bit squeaky in certain parts upstairs.

We'd love to get the squeaky floors fixed but from what I've been able to google, there doesn't seem to be any companies that specialise in this?

Is this a do-able job and if so by whom!?

    Thanks for any advice/suggestions...

Can you tell us abit more about the flooring: is it chipboard or ply or wha?

Have you any idea what the timber joists are, are they normal timber or man made joists from timber and metal brackets.

If you have down-lighters down stairs.....

It is easily fixable once you know what you are doing and appreciate the risks

You may be able to see the line of the supporting joists from following the line of the nails that are used to fix the flooring to the joists.
The idea is that you can screw the floor down along the joists adjacent to where it is squeaking.
The risks are that there maybe elec cables or heating or plumbing pipes passing underneath so if the screws you use are too long.....

The other idea is that you drill holes in the floor only, over the joist where u think the squeak is and inject some glue like "no nails" into the expected void between the underside of the flooring and the top of the joist, it will harden......

a squeaky stairs is a different ball of wax

Op ask friends & neighbours for details of a local 'finishing' carpenter.

    Thanks for your replies guys.

I'm not exactly sure what type of flooring it is.

We are Sale Agreed on the property so I'm trying to compile a "To Do" list at the moment.

The carpet on the stairs, landing and all of the upstairs rooms needs changing so I would love to fix any annoying squeaking and creaking before getting the new carpets fitted :)

I suppose i just wanted to know if this can be done by a carpet fitter or if I need employ the specifics services of specialist.

Will start googling "finishing carpenters" now , cheers

Edit (yes, part of the stairs are also a tiny bit squeaky)

... not overly as its still a relatively new house, I just hate creaking and squeaking. Drives me nuts :P
