Jury Duty

Probably one of many threads on the topic but I've had the annoyance of having a jury duty summons rock through the letterbox for the week before a holiday I've bought and paid for is due to start. Now I have no problem doing it (could be interesting) but the timing is bloody awful. Can I write to the registrar, providing copies of the flights and booked hotels and the like and request to serve at a later date?

Yes,there will be no problem with you being excused once you send in proof of your booked holiday.

Well that's answered my question too. My wife was called for the day after we're due to fly to Spain. All I have to back prove the booking now is the email from Ryanair confirming the booking to my email address but I have my wife's name listed as one of the passengers. Hopefully this will be sufficient.

Well I sent copies of the Ryanair confirmation email and the hotel confirmation email and it was good enough for them.

As an aside, I always thought the courts didn't sit during the summer months. Has that recently changed?

I probably have an email from the hotel too actually. We're probably going to cancel that and book somewhere else but they're not to know.

As an aside, for some people it really wouldn't be possible anyway to serve. My wife for example doesn't work but she minds our kids at home. Doesn't claim benefits and doesn't have her own car because we share one. The court is 25 miles away so if she was to serve, who would be liable for her transport to and from the court and who would pay for childcare? If that all comes back to me then it would break the bank on us.

Technically the autumn months of August and September... to facilitate all us landlords going back to our demesne for the harvest, obviously.

The High Court closes for August/September and the Circuit Court lists are considerably lighter.

One of those traditions that it's convenient for all to maintain I'm guessing? Though working the soil is good for you I hear ;)

It's certainly not convenient having 2 whole months in the year, plus Christmas (4 weeks), Easter (2/3 weeks) and Whit (10 days), in which you cannot earn money.

Is there much of a movement to abolish it I wonder?

Just tell the registrar that you have no alternative childcare in place. Not a problem.

The letter they send out should make that clear. All it seems to care about is people who work for the government and pilots for some reason.

Cheers for the advice. If she gets called up again we'll try to explain. Like I understand it is a duty and people need to do it, but no-one should lose out financially because they have to sit in at a trial.
