    Hi,

I am buying a 1.6 diesel TDI car. There is no TDI badge at the back. Do all diesel cars have them on back or maybe it just came off?

    Could have just been de-badged

They are generally standard however you can have them "de-badged" when you order, or some just remove them themselves... usually if the car is something a bit more powerful to not draw attention to it from "undesirables"

Of more importance would be if the BHP matches what the seller says as certainly the 1.9's come in various ratings.

You need to know which one it is, preferably it's all red. It matters what year the car is as the red letters mean different things in different years.

Yes but don't take the seller's word or the badge colour for it either.. aside from VW playing around with what each combination meant, it's easy to just replace the badge with a different one.

You'll need the engine code OP and then you can look up what it should be. (eg: 90 BHP/105 BHP/110 BHP etc)

1.6 tdi's are all 105bhp good little engines too as long as your driving scenario suits them. Constant short journeys play hell with dpf's and egr valves. As said it's most likely been factory ordered debadged. The engine code on the plate in the engine bay will tell you what engine it is anyways.

    There's 90bhp ones too in the 1.6.

The KW output will be on a sticker in the service book and under the boot carpet to check.

The badge missing could be someone taking it off to look cleaner, or may be missing due to a previous repair so it's worth looking or signs of that.

Thanks. It is a 2011 UK import, I can see where Bluemotion badge was at the back but this is gone too.

Is is still on UK plates or on Irish plates? Some sites will give you a lot of info about the car.
You should probably do a HPI check on it if you plan to buy it.

Don't let the garage bit lull you into false sense of security. Do an hpi check and also check previous mileage on uk mot website , pm me the Reg if you want ill check the last recorded mileage.

Just did a motor check, says there was 2 owners, Garage said 1 owner. Does the 2nd owner include garage?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,522 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

    Nope.

I should just walk away from it ?

If you have the UK reg there is plenty of info available online about the car. A good deal more then if it was already on irish plates.

If you put the reg into here it will give you some info on the car.

My mistake I was sure the op said
Mk6 Golf in the first post. Mk6 Golfs only have the 105bhp one

2 owners isn't reason enough, more that the garage are making up answers when they don't know them. That's what would worry me TBH.

There's a 90bhp one in the MK6 too...people like watching paint dry, waiting for the kettle to boil and all that:)

I don't think they got that in the uk though.

Basic S trim had them alright. Wasn't as popular as the 105bhp one.

    Look for this sticker:

    vehicle_data.jpg

It can appear stuck in the service book, and there is usually one in the car somewhere (Often where the spare tyre is) Additionally, you'll usually find a similar sticker on the door pillars on the driver or passenger side, similar to this:

    321503_orig.jpg?118

Between the two, you can exactly determine the engine and possibly the options included.

I always thought it was the opposite. People would buy a fastish car model but with a puny engine and then de-badge so folk wouldn't know?

What you say makes sense though.

Learn something new everyday. I've honestly never seen one in Ireland, the 105 is grand in a golf can't say I'd like it in 90bhp form the 105 gives the impression of being just enough a 90 must be very dead
