I have an 06 Ford Smax with 250000 km on the clock. I mind her as much as i can and have started using my neighbours brother in law who's a mechanic to keep on top of repairs with it.

This morning the car wouldnt start and he took the car away with him after we push started it. Turns out that there was a leak in the engine coolant and it had gotten into the inside of the starter and broke it. So he has reconditioned the starter and fixed the leak.

    Cost €230

    Does that seem exhorbitant?

I have no idea but i just have that nagging feeling that its ott.

    Thanks

Not sure about Smax but yeah, coolant can leak out and drip onto stuff soaking them.
230 sounds like a lot. A new one would be less than that, but then you have labour on top..

230 all in with receipt and vat. Sounds ok if indeed it has a new starter ,and its fitted with leak solved.

    S-Max didn't come with a 1.9TDI engine.

    1.8TDCI or 2.0TDCI?

He probably doubled his investment, but that business. Still reasonable if its fixed correctly.
Charging 550 would be taking the mick.

Fixing the leak may have cost just as much or more as the starter depending where it was leaking from. Some of the hoses are hundreds of Euro.

I'd say he done you a favor taking it anyway and returning it all sorted. That sounds reasonable for the labour involved.

Was probably leaking from the thermostat housing down onto the starter. €230 was very very cheap to get both the leak and starter sorted.

Really all depends what parts he fitted to sort the leak.
Thermostat housings leak on those and it sits above the starter. The thermostat housing is in two parts and if he didnt replace both chances are it will leak again.
As for the price it would be a good price for a reman starter and repair a leak if its done right.
