I've B BE C1 C1E and W on my current [recently expired] licence. Does anyone know with certainly if I can apply for a new 10 year licence with just W, B and BE [cat-1] entitlements and at some later time add the C1 and C1E entitlements to the licence. If so how much time do I have [ 5 years, 10 years ?]. Do you have any links to the official answer ?
    TIA

No you need to apply for whatever you actually have if you don't it's gone for good.

It has happened to people before where errors were made.

If you have them I would suggest don't let them go.

I'm not sure what circumstances would see you wanting to put those categories on hold.... Either way it's not possible. If you don't renew a category its gone. And if you want to get it back you have to do a test again

You only get a 5 year licence once you get past B, still have to pay the same as a 10 year one, and do a medical for each renewal.

Yeah I know that, getting medical for the D license next week, but its not exactly huge money once every 5 years.. why put it off for the sake of €60

Though cost isn't the over riding issue the cost is not e60 but e55 for the renewal plus e80 for the eye test (Fines Limerick with no slots immediately available) plus e55 for the doctor to sign a form and of course it's double all that over the 10 year period making it e380 compared to e55 for the same piece of plastic with a little less ink on it.

Update on this question as no one actually had the correct information, reminds me of Bangkok :)
The NDLS have a 'Declaration to Surrender Categories' form which specifically states

I understand that I can have the categories now excluded restored to my licence if I submit a valid Medical Report (Form D501) for these categories within a period of 10 years from the date they were last included on my licence. I understand that otherwise it will be necessary for me to take out a learner permit in the categories concerned.

Also the RSA replied to my email query with the following
    Thank you for your e-mail.
Please be advised that it is possible to renew your Category 1 entitlements now and at a later stage, on provison of a medical report form you can re-instate your category 2 entitlements.

So there you have it, a category lapses completely 10 years after the date it was last valid even if it is not on your current driving licence.
