    Hi all

I have an unopened litre of Castrol Edge LL-04 which has been in my BMW's boot just in case since the dealer handed it to me on Paddy's Day 2013.

The car has never used a drop of oil in the subsequent 54000 miles (impressive in itself). Obviously it means I still have an unopened litre of etc. etc.

    Does unopened oil go "off"?!

No it will be fine, after all it has been in the ground for thousands of year, will be grand.

It turns back in to a dinosaur after 4 years.

I assume it not the same oil (in the engine) for 54000 miles and its had a few services?

    DO NOT USE THIS OIL.

I'm not sure what's going on here but this has warning signs all over it. There's no way that's a real BMW, could it be a debadged Toyota or a kit car of some type?

Synthetic oil comes out of the ground?

    No, it's manufactured.

Are you trying to tell us you haven't changed your oil in 54,000 miles?

No, I'm asking whether the litre of top-up oil I've had in the boot since March 2013 is still OK to use, as I've not had to use it, as the car hasn't needed topping up between services since then.

I'm one of those crazy, crazy guys who changes oil every 12k miles, not your typical Irish motorist.

I have read online that the only truly completely synthetic oil is Mobil 1, whether that's true or not I don't know. All the others include a certain level of historic organics.

The main point with synth oil as I understand is that the molecules are all the same, making the oil uniform, smoother and better. Or maybe it's just a spiel..

Well there is apparently more than one exec. car run by an oil company that has never had its oil changed, just to prove the point.

Anyhoo, is my 1 litre of oil OK to use or not?!

Mobil-1 is a Group V ester-based oil. Group IV PAO-based brews like Edge 5W-30 LL-04 are also fully-synthetic. Group III hydrocracked full-synths like Magnatec are highly-refined dinosaur juice and can't be marketed as full-synth in Germany.

Yes. A Group IV oil like that will be just fine.
