Whats App. New Phone .. old chats.... no names :(

    I got a new phone. Backed up Whats app on my old phone to google drive and when I set it up on the new phone, restored the backup so all good.

    however, I have a good number of chats that i'm part but not everybody in those chats is in my contacts.

    so now in those chats, all their messages just have their numbers and not names anymore.

    anyone got any idea how I get their names back?

    Would this not be a syncing of contact data rather than a whatsapp issue? Are your contacts backed up correctly?

    My guess is that the group chats might of had people they aren't contacts with. And it just hasn't picked up the display names yet.

    Did you sync your contacts across? Some might have just saved to the phone/sim rather than being backed up to Google Contacts.

    Yea, my contacts are fine. I use Exchange sync for my contacts.

    You know the way you might get invited to a whats app group. there may other people in that group who aren't in your contacts. (most of the time I don't need or want them in my contacts). if I do, i'll add them. anybody I have added, well they are fine and their names are coming up.

    but for the people who are not in my contacts, all you can see in whats app though is their number. but once they post a message in the group, their whats app name comes up.

    so on my old phone, I knew who all these people were. now on the new phone, their names are not coming up, it is only their numbers. maybe I have to wait till they post another message to the group chat for it to update their names, but I was just wondering if there was a way to get all the names.

    need to find someone from an old chat..... lol

    Bingo, that's it. I was writing my last post and only spotted this after.

    So is there anyway to get the display names back?
