Do you encrypt your phone?

I have an 8 digit unlock pin on my phone but should I encrypt the whole phone in androids security settings?

Had a nightmare last night my phone was stolen and the sheer panic knowing somone is viewing all your pictures, your emails and accessing your fb etc and sending gods knows what messages to your friends and family and them thinking its you is enough to cause anyone distress.

I think I'd really like to encrypt my whole phone for maximum protection but I understand there is a risk of data loss if somthing goes wrong during the process.

Isn't it possible to brick your phone remotely now?

I had one encrypted and performance went to the dogs. I think it can be a problem where some handsets don't have an encryption chip and rely of software. It was easy to reset and restore though.

I had to turn on the encryption due to work matters, because otherwise i wouldn't give a f*** if someone wants my photos (which are not interesting at all), or social media apps

I had my phone encrypted with a previous employer (HTC M7 and M8). It caused slowness on both phones.
If you turn on encryption and then want to turn off encryption later, you will be forced to do a full data reset on the phone.

I don't encrypt because I understand it can cause hassle with custom ROMs. But I have Cerberus installed so I can remotely wipe the phone.

Well no, that only stops them using the live system, you can still boot to fastboot and dump the phones file system entirely.

I encrypted my smart ultra 6 and it took about 20 mins. Seems to be running fine..

I'll leave my oneplus 2 for the minute though. I wanna see if my Ultra is gonna give crappy slow downs in the coming days.

What would they do then? Would they have full access to emails so they can reset accounts?

I believe that prevents the app to be executed under certain circumstances, but the data itself it still available and easily accessible

Applock is a load of rubbish, it works and it doesn't work.

I encrypted my old phone and had trouble viewing some photos when I transferred them to my Macbook :(

I use encryption on all my devices and I am not facing any noticeably impact in performance.
So I would recommend to encrypt your device(s) to ensure no one gains access to your data.

    Devices: Android: Galaxy Note 4
Windows: ThinkPad Yoga 14 / ThinkPad X230 Tablet (250 GB Samsung Evo 840 SSD)
