Damn , tough choice. I've £12 Amazon credit from the last one
    or the €5 Argos voucher

    https://www.argos.ie/static/ArgosPromo3/includeName/giftvoucher1.htm&mvt=cb_wk44_voucher
Free €10 voucher when you spend €100 or more
Free €5 voucher when you spend €50 or more
WITH ANY PURCHASE BETWEEN 27TH APRIL AND 3RD MAY
& SPEND BETWEEN THE 27TH APRIL AND 31ST MAY

    BTW
If anyone got a Fire Tablet 7" around Christmas please check your adaptor.
There is a risk of FIRE missing out on free credit.

Why not use the Argos voucher before it expires and get the 16gb, albeit blue, for €55.
Then use Amazon credit on books etc or anything if presumably it has longer or no expiry

1024 x 600 Res is hard to stomach long for reading. Great for kids or car entertainment/streaming music. Get a cd mount on aliexpress and you've a cheap sat nav. These Fire tablets don't have gps but you can tether your gps using tethergps app for sat nav.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 71 ✭✭U2Flyboy

Yeah as previous poster said no GPS which is a disadvantage in my opinion. I bought 2 of these in Argos last Christmas. Ok as a ebook reader and you can load Google Play store and apps on them but they are limited in moving apps to Micro Sd card. Dont expect too much from them and you wont be dissappointed!

I have one and have no problem reading on it. 1024x 600 is perfectly fine for a 7 inch device

Got one for my daughter as an Xmas present in black Friday sales for $35. It's probably just about worth that much. Very limited usage in Ireland. Saying that i bet you could drop it 3 stories and It'd be fine

The kids version is excellent . Loads of free content and an OS that they can use without needing help

I rooted mine with RootJunkies Super tool that's posted on XDA/YouTube then flashed SlimRoms LP Custom ROM onto it and now it's just like a Nexus 7 in terms of the OS, There's no Amazon Services on it or any bloatware apps taking up storage space so I have plenty of apps installed etc.

I would definitely recommend going this route if you find Amazon's stock OS a bit limited like I did.

Anyone know if your liable to get hit with customs when ordering from Zavvi? I remember there was something in relation to this previously but thought they ended up having to include UK VAT on products or something?!?!

I just ordered two kids versions on Monday so I was hoping to hear this. Does the video content all work in Ireland? Any idea how much they charge for the Unlimited subscription after the free year is up?

This would suggest not! Might need a VPN service to avail of the free stuff!

The games and books work here, the videos don't . You can put Netflix on it and set that to kids mode.
I think it's about 3 euro a months free the first year.

just be wary that there have been many versions of the kindle fire hd 7

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fire_HD

it's not clear which version is being sold by zavvi and iwoot - could be an ancient one.
    it's deliberately vague on details.
the only detail that helps narrow it down is that the screen is 216 ppi.
that means that it could be a version from 2012,2013 or 2014 from the wiki link.
    it's hard to tell

It also says that there is no back facing camera, which makes 2nd gen (2012)

Yep. €45 isn't too bad, but why not make it clear.
I didn't think of it, as all of their Fire Tablets and Phones seem to be selling off for peanuts.
I usually avoid Zavvi etc. as they're quite expensive for tat. Very rare something decent appears on it, these also look like they were stock that they couldn't shift in the U.S.

deliberately misleading by holding back details tho to shift them - €45 is not expensive. but it wouldn't run anything at this stage - probably struggles with 720p video.

Can you post a link to that thread please

Tried posting this on the Android app 3 times already but for some reason it didn't register the post but using the touch site now so sorry for the late response.

The guide i followed is in this video and there is a link to the XDA thread in the description of the video too.

    https://youtu.be/sVv1D_LNLTg

Also you can use the tool to root and install Google play without getting rid of the Amazon services & Launcher.

Its not an ereader, and not an iPad, but for <50 quid they are practical and nearly disposable devices. Got one for the mam, mil, and a spare one for just googling and using for recipes display in the kitchen. i got them in the US for 35 too so even better but its a very solid bargain anywhere.

Argos have the 8GB version for 59.99, with the tenner back via ptsb it represents the same value as buying it from Amazon

Amazon are also doing the 16GB version for £51.24 which works out at about €68 incl currency exchange

or add-on an 8GB SD card for £1.87

Not everything can be moved to SD though. 8GB storage and 1GB RAM doesn't really cut it these days with more phone hardware shipping with 32GB and 3/4GB

Have one of the 16gb reserved in Argos until cob today for €59.99. Just wondering what performance is like? Will b only used for kids watching YouTube & playing the odd game! Opinions appreciated!

For that use performance will be fine, mainly what I use it for too and I'm happy with it, obviously it won't run high end games that well but casual games run fine.

Its the 16GB alright, thanks to OP in post #2. It seems to have been a pricing error as only the blue one was available at that price, rest were €74.99. Collected it yesterday evening, tried charging full whack but showed them the reservation & got it for €59.99 no problem. :D

Haven't had a chance to play with it yet but looks very nice for the price. Bit smaller than I was expecting as haven't had a 7" tablet before but will do for the kids on hols.

Strange, I picked up mine on Sunday, also blue, only 8gb for that same price though... Also got a tenner back thanks to PTSB rewards so not a complete loss
