98 Astra G 1.4 X14XE Engine - over revving issue

Greetings all, Bought a 98 1.4 Astra recently as run around, 118K miles. When changing gears, ie foot off gas and pressing clutch, engine almost always blips up about 300-400 revs instead of dropping down. Revs fine and steady at idle around 750-800rpm. Assumed it was throttle body, it was pretty dirty as was idle air control valve, cleaned both, no difference. Tried to clean air sensor, couldn't get it as clean as I wanted so bought new one, no difference. Checked vacuum hoses for tightness/leaks, splits, pin holes, none that I can see.
Then read in Astra Owners site that this engine - X14XE Ecotech - is supposed to do this:eek: Can't see how that makes sense, especially in an engine supposed to be all about economical driving.
Has anyone got a 1.4 Astra 1998 - 2004 that has experienced this issue?
Also cleaned EGR, no difference. No check light activated, no probs starting, just this reving up when changing gears while driving. You end up taking foot off gas, waiting 2-3 seconds, then shifting. Annoying, and not useful when overtaking or for fuel economy either.

I have a 98 Astra 1.4 and my one does not do this, looks like you have tried the common problems EGR valve etc.. , the closes i got to your problem one time was when the car kept revving really high, foot off accelerator, turned out to be a crack in air pipe coming from back of engine to throttle bottle on the right, repaired with tape been OK since.

Was beginning to think no one on this site driving astra G 1.4!

Will check pipes/hoses again. Not make sense that engine designed to operate this way. Was beginning to think it might be inlet manifold gasket...
    Thanks SCOOP 64.

It's quite normal for an engine to rev somewhat when the clutch is engaged. It's not indicative of any problem.

I've never driven a car where when you take your foot off the gas and press clutch to change up the revs RISE rather than fall. Can understand how a sticky/dirty butterfly valve in throttle body or kinked throttle cable or faulty sensor if gas is fly-by-wire might cause revs to stay at same level when clutch pressed in and foot off gas, but actually rise by 400-500RPM...? Never experienced it before in normal driving tbh.

Mine started doing that just before the head gasket went. may not be a symptom but worth looking for mayo under the oil cap
