Dealer didn't send change of ownership

So I traded my old car last month.

Last week I received notice that I owe tax on it.

The old car is still listed in my name.

I have contacted tax office and they have sent me a declaration form.

Now I can't get hold of the dealer. I've rang 3 times, first 2 was told they would send off the paperwork but it seems they haven't.

What is the angle for the dealer? Is it just laziness? Surely there is nothing for them to gain from not changing ownership. He said the car was scrap, and took it as p/e as a deal sealer. It's a 01 fabia with dents and broken headlight. So I don't think it would have been sold. Barely drives so its not getting speeding tickets or being used as a getaway vechical.

Is this just dealer laziness or do I need to be more concerned. I'll fill the declaration today and send it out to shannon

probably laziness but shouldn't you have sorted out the change of ownership and sent off the necessary paper work yourself? I'm not being a smart ass here, I'm genuinely asking so anyone who knows can they tell us?

Nah, if you sell to dealer you just hand over all docs, incl the logbook.
If you sell privately you send logbook to Shannon.

OP you have a dated sales receipt yeah?

    Yes,

You are responsible for the change over.
It's a small print under the form for private sale on the ownership papers

    Something along the lines
"if selling to a dealer fill out form rs105"
The dealer send that on I belive.

In the mass of paperwork involved it was something I missed, just signed under the form and he handed me the keys to the new car.

Was more concerned with checking the promised work on my new car than what happens to my old junker.

I'm guessing he put all the paper work on a pile with the intention of doing it later, got distracted and filled it in the round cabinet.

What I'm worried about is if there is some other motivation, but I can't see any motivation for not declaring this cars ownership.

I do, but the reg just says "blue fabia 01". He bought it sight unseen so just asked me what year.

Call into the dealer and camp out while they sort the paperwork.
Bring a flask of tea and some sandwiches, you may be in for a wait :D

    Work would love that.

Think I'm going to trust this declaration from the tax office would solve the issue.

I'm pretty satisfied that there is no motivation at play other than standard "not directly affecting me - can't be arsed" laziness

Just managed to get through just now and the dealer says he sent the form off this morning.

Anyone know roughly how long this process takes?.

When should I be chasing this up? week? 2 weeks? more?

    Depends
If there's a lot of cars needing processing then several weeks
    Hopefully around 2 weeks.

You can track the progress on motortax.ie under vehicle transaction enquiry. It will show up as "purchased by dealer on....)
