Hi, I am going for a nurse interview on Friday for the HSE. It's been 4 years since I worked in the HSE and I remember my last interview being really difficult. I'm naturally very nervous at interviews and can't verbalise what I'm thinking. Anyone have any advice for interviews or hse-specific tips?
    Thanks!

Are you being interviewed for a post in a specific speciality/area? If so, brush up on current issues relating to that area and have plenty of examples of your experience in this type of nursing to date.

Expect scenario-based questions around the provision of care and perhaps your interpersonal skills from a teamwork point of view.

Have lots of examples to hand in your mind of examples of times that your work demonstrated evidence-based practice. Make sure you can talk with ease about how you maintain your continuing professional development.

Don't be afraid to big yourself up and talk about any achievements you may have: awards, post grad studies, work on a particular project which was successful in improving patient care.

My last interview was for a CNS post and a question about CPD then lead into one asking what was the last research article I'd read. I wasn't expecting the question but thankfully one popped into my head. Perhaps find an article relating to where you want to work and have a read of it tonight. I wasn't expected to quote the article word for word or reference it but it just showed that I wasn't spoofing about CPD.

If you're not familiar with the National Service Plan already, it might be worth having a glance over it. It's a big document and much/most of it wont be relevant to you but in the event that service provision/planning should somehow come up, at least you will show that you have an interest in the "big picture" of what's happening in the HSE and your speciality and how your post will fit into that.

    Best of luck!

Wow that's so helpful thank you so much.

I wasn't told what area I'm interviewing for, so I'm going to prepare for medical and surgical and endoscopy.

I've never heard of the national service plan so that is a good thing to know.

Check the NSP for data relating to endoscopy services and perhaps make reference to your understanding of its implications for you as a staff nurse (eg targets vs workload) but don't get too bogged down in facts and figures. A general awareness should be more than sufficient. Don't forget that the patient is your priority in all you do ;)
