The judge told Mr Mohan there would be “difficulties” if there was any repetition of an alleged incident between Alex Kane and a security officer. The judge was referring to allegations by a security firm retained by the receiver at the Granard premises that security men on duty last Saturday night were offered an inducement by Alex Kane to vacate the premises for a time.

wo Co Longford SUV dealers have been told to pay €10.2m to the Revenue Commissioners for underpaying and the non payment of VAT.

It was the first case of this kind ever taken by Revenue at the Commerical Court.

The two brothers John and Pauric Kane run an SUV dealership in Granard, Co Longford.

The case arose from an investigation undertaken in 2004, which found evidence of non-payment of VAT and the underpayment of VAT.

Today, Mr Justice Peter Kelly in the Commercial Court found the defendants had not demonstrated any arguable defence and awarded a judgment against them for the full amounts.

He refused any stay on the judgment and awarded costs against them.

In 2012 Mr Justice Sean Ryan imposed the sentence on Pauraig Kane, formerly one of the operators of Kane Motors of Granard, following an application by the Revenue to jail him for contempt of court orders granted in May 2009.

The Revenue Commissioner claim Pauraig Kane was part of an elaborate hoax whereby vehicles continued to be sold from the Kane’s yard using falsified invoices and third party cheques, to ensure they couldn’t be traced to Mr Kane, who must pay a 5.2 million euro tax debt before he can resume business.

Is the Kanes in Granard anyway related to Kanes Autos Ltd in Edgeworthstown, Co. Longford?

One or two cars in Kanes in Edgeworthstown that I think are worth looking at, but I am weary in case it is the same family as the ones in Granard.

As far as I know they are. They seem to have been around the block a few times when it comes to the finance end a things, but they have sold some stuff through out the country so I can't see them being that bad

There are garages who fall foul of the taxman for reasons of poor judgement, or for reasons out of their control, then there are garages who are just crooks - who systematically con customers, suppliers and revenue.
