Hi, can anybody tell me about how much a deposit a landlord can ask for?

How many weeks rent can it equal?

    Thanks

The usual was 1 months rent in advance, although some landlords are asking for 2 month rent in advance as a deposit (& 1 months rent payable in advance, as is normal)
So it could equal up to 8.

    As much as he wants

Normally a months deposit plus a months rent in advance however 2 or even 3 months deposit is becoming more common similar to other countries.

Because some tenants use deposit as payment for last months rent landlords are left with no security in case of damage done by tenants so some are looking for higher deposit.

2 months is becoming normal and cuts out the time wasters.

If a LL is looking for 2 months a good compromise (if he's willing to compromise) is to ask to pay first and last months rent plus one month security. It gives everyone a bit more security.
