Paying motor tax for secondhand car

    Hi all.

I bought a second hand car 2 weeks ago. I received the log book shortly after.

Does the Motor Tax office send me a letter/email to tell me when tax is due with pin number etc? Or do I have to go into my Motor Tax office?

I have heard nothing from them as yet.

    Thanks

No, the office won't initiate contact.
You can pay tax online or at the office.

    Thanks Biko.

I'll go on-line. I was expecting to get a letter with a pin number.

Edit: I see now under the Pin Retrieval there is details about "recently purchased vehicle".

The disc in the window tells you when the tax is due.

    You request pin online motortax.ie

You can tax once car has changed ownership this can also be checked online as you don't have to wait for log book vlc

I think the pin is the last 5/6 digits of the chassis number, usually in the logbook

Edit : Just checked, it's the last 6 of the vrc number

Only the PIN after importing or first registration. After that they're issued by the tax office.
In the case of the first taxing of a brand new or imported vehicle, the PIN is the last six characters of your vehicle's chassis number as printed on your RF100 form. You should have received your RF100 form either from your Motor Dealer or the Revenue Commissioners.
