Coming home but no job lined up

    Hello All,

I am looking to move back to Ireland from the UK but finding it more difficult than expected to get a job in my area(mechanical engineering) from abroad.

Any people here move home with nothing lined up and how long were you waiting before you got something?

I am wondering if I'm better off to be based in Ireland while job hunting.

Your CV could be being run through an automatic scanner / ATS and could be getting discarded by a machine long before it sees a human if your address isn't currently in Ireland.

It's very common for companies or recruitment agencies so use a piece of software to scan applications for certain keywords (like qualifications) and the address being in Ireland is likely to be the first thing it checks for before moving on to check for others.

I'm not in engineering but my husband and I got jobs (mines is a salary office based role and his is a managerial position in retail) in about 3 weeks to a month really.

From our point of view it was better to apply while here because it meant that we could immediately go to an interview and not have it be a hassle for the company. I got my role because I didn't have a notice period to serve and they really needed somebody soon.

But that info might be useless in your field.

You did very well to get sorted within a month. IME the whole process can take over 3 months - from the initial interview to a job offer or even longer. It all depends on the company
