How to help undocumented person ...

Hoping this is the right forum and I'll be keeping it somewhat vague as this is a real person I'm trying to help and they have a right to their privacy.

This person was born in Ireland to a traveller family who didn't register their birth. The family moved to England where, eventually, this person became estranged from them for reasons I won't go into.

This person is now homeless in Dublin and can't get any help from the state because they are undocumented, even though they are Irish.

What I want to do is help them apply for ... citizenship? A PPS number? Or ....? I really don't know where to start.

I'm writing to Dublin City Council officials and various TDs/Councillors/etc. but I'm getting nowhere. Even the homeless services people, with the best of intentions, can't really do anything other than have them compete for a bed in a hostel.

I would really like to help them move on a bit from this. They don't have any mental health issues, they don't do drugs, they don't beg, they sell The Big Issue and rely on the kindness of charities to survive.

They just seem to be trapped in a vacuum.

Any suggestions? Many thanks in advance.

    Kudos Jackie.

I'm sure you'll get some good advice here but you may also try FLAC.ie.

Maybe try the Traveler support organisations (Pavee Point etc) - it must be an issue they've run into before.

    And fair play to you.

    Thank you both.

They have a meeting with Mercy Law Resource Centre today, if they can't help we'll try FLAC.

I will contact Pavee Point on their behalf but have been a little reluctant to do so so far because, from what they've told me, PP have not been helpful, but everything's worth a shot!!

The Irish Traveller Movement have an independent law centre, they'd probably be your best bet.
