Three Ireland network switching to roaming and not back to 3G/4G

I'm having issues at the minute that have become increasingly annoying. I'm a Three Prepay customer using a Nexus 6.

In different locations throughout Cork City my network will randomly go to 'r' or roaming. I understand this may be due to a signal blackspot but it never switch's back. I have to manually go to Settings > Mobile Networks > Choose Network. It varies I've done it 3 times today alone.

If it dies switch to 'r' I simply go to mobile settings choose '3' and I get 4G again.

It also happened on a Nexus 5. Three just say contact the manufacturer.

All APN settings are correct. I've wiped and manually entered them 3 times.

    Two questions

    1. Has any other Three customer experienced similar issues?

    2. If yes to the above if you moved network did it stop?

Three are adamant it's the phone I've seen similar reports on different forums but nothing concrete. Considering moving to Vodafone or Meteor.

    Thanks

EDIT: Mods sorry if it's in the wrong thread/category.

Me too on a nexus 6 in Longford. Most of the time I just have no coverage since I switched a fortnight ago. I was on three and o2 separately before and coverage was never as bad as this. I'm nearly always roaming when I do have coverage. I'll be porting off again next month at this rate.

all the time... i'm in Cork city also...

I have considered moving, but can't get the same data allowance...

luckily, the places that I tend to lose 4g, I have wifi access, so I do can get by.

i'm on a one+ one, the APN is coming from the SIM or being pushed OTA from three, because there is 3ireland buried in it somewhere, so it's not the apn, but I have changed it what they have posted on their website, but has made no difference.

used to happen to me on other phones also...

I never had the issue when I was with o2, switched to 3 before the merger, hoped we would get the 'best of both' after the merger, but nothing has changed...

Have had the same issue in Dublin as well. Not often, but usually just when it there is no signal at all and it seems to stick with the roaming one afterwards.

    Not happening as often lately.

    Nexus 5x

Its dependent on the handsets PRL, depending on that users will experience it more or less.

You're roaming to the O2 network but the phone doesnt hunt back as it has consistent 2G which is rare to lose (the o2 network was good, if left to age).

Enable WCDMA/LTE only from the service menu and unless you go into a complete dead zone your phone won't leave the 3 network.

I don't seem to have an option for wcdma/lte, but I have a 'preferred network type' setting which is set to 4g (other 2 options are 3g & 2g)

I think the wording is slightly different from the last android update...

Thanks everyone. That seams to have to confirmed my fears. I have contacted 3 before they confirm the APN settings everytime do some 'tests' and then confirm everything is good on their side.

Vodafone have Unlimited calls and texts to all networks and 5 GB of data for €30. Meteor have Unlimited calls and texts and 15 GB of data for €30.

I am willing to pay the extra €10 a month compared to 3 just to get proper service. The 3 €20 deal is quite good but the signal issue is a disaster especially when it happens 5 or 6 times a day!

Massive discuss about it on the three thread. You can get around it by setting phone to 4g3g only.

Moved to Vodafone yesterday and no more issues. 4G working as normal and the 3G and 4G returns as normal when I leave a network blackspot.

Two work colleagues have OnePlus devices and are having serious issues since the 02 transition. Now also considering moving from Three also.

    Thanks for all the replies.

Used to have a handy setting on my z1 where I could specify what network types I wanted to connect to, not available on the nexus, there is a short code to access it but a quick google later I found this little app where /off you toggle 2g on /off to your hearts content. bugger all good to me as I dont even get 2g coverage here (I'm off to meteor next week) but it might come in handy for someone!
