I liked the first one, but not really the second one.
The trailer for #3 looks promising though.

    Out here mid-July.

I really liked the first two because the premise itself is fascinating, and this one looks good too - I'm sure it will be with Elizabeth Mitchell and Frank Grillo as the leads. I just hope this isn't the next Saw or Paranormal Activity type franchise where they knock out 6 or 7 of them and they lose what was great about them to begin with.

This film is absent from Vue and Cineworld's listings. (Odeon haven't updated their schedule yet.)

    Anyone know what's going on?

UK&Irl release date has been changed from July 15th to August 26th :(

Apparently it was delayed due to the shooting of that MP in the UK.

1st one was horrendous, I enjoyed the second one. Basically any film with Ethan Hawke, avoid.

I have to agree that I thought the first one wasn't great - though to be fair it was a stellar achievement on such a miniscule budget by Hollywood standards (I think just 2 or 3 million). Found the second movie much better and Frank Grillo an excellent lead. Still somewhat indifferent about this one though.

Awh, I like Training Day, Sinister, Boyhood and White Fang:(

The second one was good braindead fun. The first tried to take itself way too seriously for a concept that was farcical at best. But completely lost this in the second and thought, "to hell with it".

Terrible. These are just getting worse and worse. Why isn't more rape shown in these films? Just murder and more murder. Downright awful acting in this one too, with the "candy girls". Plus, Joe Dixon, one of the worst stereotypical "black character" I've seen in a while. Nearly everything out of his mouth was something racial.

I like black people. But, I ain't gonna let you shoot these white folks. These are our white people.

Y'all need to see this. There's a whole bunch of negroes coming right this way. And we just sitting here like a bucket of mother f'n chicken.

Ugh. Imagine a white person saying those things?

Terrible. The second was pretty good, the first was a good watch but yeah I didn't enjoy that at all.

Just watching it now. Half way through. It could go either way. We'll see.

Quite enjoyed the first two. The sequel was good B movie fun. Will make the effort to see the third one.

As regards the black characters, perhaps it is BLM inspired movement?

The premise of these films is that all laws during The Purge can be broken, not just murder. So, there would be many instances of rape. I'm not looking for 2 hours of gang-bang rape, but show something else happening than just murder. Like a 10-year old doing heroin.

Maybe the filmmaker realises that watching rape on screen can never be considered in any way entertaining and as such opted not to show it. Can't understand why anyone would want to see it, as it is the purge franchise is all about action and that's the way I'd like to keep it.

Ugh, don't make it about rape or anything like that, thats disgusting. The purge is best as a ludicrous action movie.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,584 ✭✭✭Frank O. Pinion

You mention rape and people get all mad...no, I don't want an action thriller full of rape, either. I'm saying that the premise is that ALL crimes are legal, not just murder. If the premise was just, on Purge night, you can kill anyone, it'd be fine. But it's ALL crimes, and they barely show anything besides murder. Why is the premise ALL crimes, if you're only going to show violent killings?

Anyways, this third Purge is easily the worst of series.

It's a pretty decent movie, if you enjoyed the second one it's basically more of the same - silly and outlandish but Frank Grillo makes a good one-man-army and there are some great action scenes.

    'A Midnight Clear'.

One of the best war films I've seen.

Well, the very premise is absolutely farcical. A night of unrestricted lawlessness would result in such nationwide damage, it would take a full year to address, just in time for the next "purge". :pac:

It's silly. You either go with it or you don't.

The most amazing thing about 'The Purge' is that it made $90 million on a $3 Million budget.

    That's some profit margin.

its an ok movie, it slips in to the genre of general Zombie/Virus apocalypse being chased by random gangs and assorted bad guys. The first movie was probably the best because of the more claustrophobic setup.

ive no idea if its going to go down the route but the premise of this one at least seems original for the franchise. i.e that on purge night politicians/ establishment types would take out some of the competition.

on the "why no rape" etc angle up thread TBH i think theyll get around to stuff like that down the road if it keeps being as suscessfull as it is . ok maybe when its getting to rape the series will be near its deathknell but if ALL crimes are legal then theres loads of ways they can go.

i mean i dont know about you but if I was there i wouldnt be killing people, i'd be stealing and joyriding Lamborghinis . so a purge / gone in sixty seconds/ death-race type film seems a no brainer down the road.

a 12 hour race across the nation if you will.

Actually watched the first one again last night because of this thread and it's still as dumb as a brick.

That family has to be one of the most annoying bunch of asses in any picture I've seen. Those kids especially.

Fuck sake, I'd purge on that boy myself.

The basic idea is utterly ridiculous. It's like something from a Roger Corman cheapie in the 70's. You could forgive those ideas in that sort of nonsense, but here it looks as is the film is trying hard to say something about class and whatnot, but it just doesn't have the brains to do it.

It needed a much better script and perhaps a little bit of exposition, maybe explaining that there are safe zones available for people to use on Purge night or something. The idea that you merely lock down your house is absurd. Even I could have got into their gaff.

It probably could also do with setting the film in a more distant future and show that America had become a totalitarian state, where any crime was punishable by death or something.

The more I watched it, the more I thought that it would have, perhaps, made a decent Judge Dredd film, with Dredd caught on Purge night trying to keep from being whacked by perps, in a new crazy Mega City One initiative, dreamt up by Chief Judge Cal.

'Judge Dredd - Purge Night', that could have been great! :pac:

I enjoyed it, Frank Grillo is very much in Liam Neeson mode and it works well.
I have a dislike for the main actress though for pretty much everything she's in, seems to be one of those actresses who has a constant smirk on her face and I find it really disengaging.

I hadn't actually realised there was a 2nd movie and only caught it on Netflix after watching this. 2 >> 3 >> 1 would be my ranking.

I thought they had at least indicated the threat of rape in the second one where the neighbour blasts through the door looking for her. You'd know the actor, bald, Hispanic actor, with a goatee, plays a bald, Hispanic, character in every movie he's ever been in.

Could do with a montage of other crimes though; looting, car booting, breaking red lights, playing ball games on prohibited grass, skateboarding outside the library etc etc.

Back from seeing it this evening - it's probably my favourite of the three so far, or at the very least tied with the first one.

Seen it earlier. Was enjoyable enough I guess.
Thought they killed off Candy Girl too soon. Was rooting for her character even though she was one of the "bad guys".

She would have made for a interesting Villain but I did cheer when
She got hit with the car
. I still think the second film is the best in the trilogy, Grillo was more kick ass in that one. Smart move from the creators to turn the Purge into a action franchise, works a lot better. I think Election Year would have worked better if they just had Grillo and senator character, didn't have the guy who played Bubba in Forrest Gump and other two. Maybe have had the senator get kidnapped a lot earlier, then have Grillo just run through a ton of bad guys.
