Unusual beam in front of plane

    Last Friday I noticed something weird in the sky, a plane was flying high above with the usual contrails behind, but ahead of the plane all the way to the horizon was a black 'beam' which the plane was following. See example below, the one I saw was more defined though, what causes it?

    Sun creating a shadow off the contrails, they then look like black beams.....

    Actually, shadow makes sense as the plane was flying East in the evening, never noticed it before though.

    That picture works, they are shadows.
