Garmin issue

Trawler through forums but couldn't find specific answer to my issue

Garmin Edge 705 powers on but doesn't sync to laptop from any of 3 usb ports. This happened last week so I reinstalled the drivers and it synced. This time I tried the same but no joy. I removed and uploaded Garmin express and connect and no joy there either.

The usb cable is working fine as it charges the head unit so I'm scratching my head as to what is up

    Any thoughts welcome

Try using a different cable and a different PC?

If the problem is with the Garmin, you might have to do a reset..which will erase all your data. So it's a last resort...try a different cable and PC first.

FWIW, my Edge 200 gives similar hassle when I connect it to my work PC. I might have to plug in and out 3 or 4 times before it syncs and other times it syncs on the first attempt. I've noticed that times when it doesn't sync the Edge always shows the battery as 100% - when it does sync the battery charges.

At home I sync with an iMac and it always syncs first time.

Are you using the actual garmin cable or a generic usb cable? The generic cables will charge the garmin fine however for data transfer and sync the garmin cable is specific and a non branded one will not work correctly with it. I'm on my 3rd garmin and raised this with them about 3 years ago and they confirmed that they are specific cables.

I've used loads of non Garmin cables. old blackberry cables, seee.sense cables, in fact I don't think I've used a Garmin cable in about 3 years

    further investigation

tried with the work pc and I managed to at least get the usb mass storage sign with the history etc on my scren.

However, when I went into history, the rides from the past week were not showing in anything other than tcx files.

Last week I deleted all files on the unit. Might I have done something to affect the future recording and history ?

I can see the rides on the unit but it's not transferring to Garmin Connect. When I manually try to upload the .tcx file, it was coming through as an invalid format.

So it looks like the rides themselves in whatever format they reocrd, although visible on the unit, are not allowing the transfer up to Garmin Connect. Separately, the unit is acting strange - going straight to charging or to powering up rather than allowing the USB mass storage to do its thing

i'm still no wiser as to what to do. It's only 2 rides I need to upload so maybe reformatting is the way to go.How do I do this ?

    Hi Taxuser...

    This might help.
If your garmin has a problem or is interupted for example uploading using garmin express there is a file stored on your PC and until it is deleted it wont upload further rides.
Heres the procedure to delete it:

    Windows:
Press the Windows key + R
    Type %ProgramData% in the box
    Click OK
    Open the Garmin folder
    Open the CoreService folder
    Open the Devices folder
Open the folder with the 10 digit Unit ID for your device (this can be found on the About screen on the device if there are multiple folders present)
    Right-click the Sync folder
    Click Delete

    Marty.

I went back to the unit, plugged it in, Saving History popped up on screen and bang, all the rides are now visible

I have a possessed Garmin 705 unit with a mind of its own

Possibly available for sale in the next week !

Did the 705 get wet recently?

as a matter of fact it did - only last week and I thought that might have been the issue. But then it worked fine for the full week

The cover over the usb port on the 705 is not great. Mine died after water got in. I now have an 810. If it gets wet, I always open the cover and dry it with a towel. I then leave the cover open overnight to allow any remaining moisture to evaporate. No issues so far.

I think you've probably got this sussed correctly. the cover is gone underneath the 705 so water is easily getting through. I had put it in the hot press and had thought about putting it in rice - not sure what this was, just saw it on a site somewhere.

I'm far too much of a fine weather cyclist for this to have affected me to date but all the pieces are now coming together....

    thanks,

If it got wet check there is no corrosion on the port. if there is you need to clean it.

put some rubbing alcohol on an ear but and clean as much of it off as you can. get a can of compressed air and dry it off with that using short blasts so you dont freeze it, don't use a towel or anything like it as the fibers can stick to the port.

is the 810 better than a 520 ? i'm honestly clueless on technology

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,370 ✭✭✭07Lapierre

    Well it's more expensive! :)
    It's not better, just different.

Main difference between the 520 and the 810 is the maps. You can't load maps onto the 520.

You can put maps on the 520. It takes a bit of time, but I did it with mine following the instructions https://onemanengine.com/how-to-install-bike-maps-on-the-garmin-edge-520/ you wont be able to fit the entire map of Ireland on it but I dont need that and can always add and delete bits if i really needed too. Great detail on the maps too, better than the Garmin City Navigator 2012 map i have for the car.

    Never knew that thanks!

Garmin 810 has a bad reputation online.

In my own case it simply freezes at "loading profiles" and nothing I have tried, including following detailed online instructions from dedicated forums, has been able to resolve the issue.
