Upstart Crow is a new BBC comedy series based on the life and works of Shakespeare. It's one of the pieces the BBC have produced to mark the 400th anniversary of the bard's death. The show is written by Ben Elton and the cast includes David Mitchell, Harry Enfield and Gemma Whelan, better known as Yarra Greyjoy from GoT.

I went into this with no expectations. I was looking to fill a bit of time really and figured I'd try it out and I knew nothing about the cast or the writer. I was pleasantly surprised. Being Ben Elton, it's not that far removed from Blackadder and it's shot in the same way in that it's really just two sets and a fairly minimal production. It reminds me of some of the 80's era sitcoms I grew up watching on BBC and I like that about it. It delivered a good few laughs as well. All in all, for a first episode, I came away feeling quite pleased.

I think they pretty much took the Blackadder template and applied it to Shakespeare here. I think Ben Elton can be hit or miss myself but I think in starting with a known quantity here they managed to pull someting good out of what could have been a disaster. I'm looking forward to the next episode when it drops which is pretty good in itself.

It seems to split the vote but I always like it bar when Elton crow-barred Brexit in just a bit too gratuitously a couple of episodes back. Lisa Tarbuck is great as Ann Hathaway.

Only just started on S3 and hoping it maintains high standards of first two. It’s safe territory for Elton as was pointed out but no less impressive for that. I love the character of Bottom, pretty much cracks me up every time he opens his mouth.
