Pergola Build Materials

I'm looking to have a Pergola built in my garden measuring approx 25ft x 7ft. I have contacted a company who usually provide sheds, etc, but they do advertise Pergolas also.

They have suggested it be constructed from 4x4s for the uprights and 2x1 for the rafters. This sounds a bit shabby to me so I am just looking for some opinions on whether the materials suggested would be adequate for a pergola?

    Thanks.

4x4 is fine for uprights. 2x1, what, are you sure they said 2x1?

    Sorry 4x1 my mistake!

Depends what look you are going for.
I would think 4x1 would look a bit flimsy and would be thinking of something with a bit more meat on it like 4x2 or 5x2.

Have done one myself with 4x4 posts, 4x2 frame around the posts and 5x2 rafters slightly notched into the framework.

Sounds good to me! Thanks, I'll get back onto them and ask for 4x2 :)

Ask em what type of wood they arer using , larch probably the best budget wood for outdoor buildings. Oak or Red cedar if you have more to spend.
