New Mercedes e class

Took a spin in the new Mercedes e class at the weekend.
I was seriously impressed I have to say and wouldn't be a Mercedes fan.
They've really upped the stakes in every regard. I would previously have always said bmw 520d was the best at this level but the performance, quality and equipment of the merc are well ahead of it. I know there is a new 5 coming but it will have its work cut out.
The sales guy said they are pitching it at a younger market and I could see a few conquest sales alright.
If they can overcome their old image it should do well.
    Any opinions?

Not a fan of the Russian doll approach to styling a car range, but if your going down that direction then the S class is a decent template and the E-class looks to be a far more successful attempt than the C-Class. Always felt I needed a bus pass to get a E class, but this really appeals to me.... could be I'm turning into a ould fuker too.

Curious, did this have the all digital display or the very base model with analogue instruments? I read that this poverty spec was projected to be a tiny portion of their overall sales and remembered thinking that they'd probably all be in Ireland.

The poverty spec display was all that was in the cars they have in stock and it looks far from poverty in real life.
To get the digital dash you have to spec the dash at 1100 odd euro and command online which comes to over 4 grand in total so can't see there being too many of them. The interior is actually a very nice place.

Mate of mine has a spanking-new one of them on the way shortly. I'm looking forward to "confiscating" it temporarily! :D

Can't get over the fact that the car is just so dull to look at, it is inoffensive but there is zero that we have not seen on the S and C in terms of styling. If you don't care about that sort of thing, and many don't, it is a compelling package.

I think it will be fairer to compare it to the new 5. from an article on the car in todays indo...
    Facts & figures
    Mercedes E-Class 220d automatic (9G-Tronic) saloon, Avantgarde with AMG Line. 1,950cc, 194bhp, 3.9/4.3 litres/100km depending on model, 112g/km, €200 road tax.

Price for 220d Avantgarde from €52,850; AMG Line €57,650, options (full parking pack, keyless Go) help push test car price to €60,492.

    http://www.independent.ie/life/motoring/car-reviews/mercedes-eclass-this-is-prince-thats-not-yet-a-king-34709891.html

The BM currently starts from €45,200. How many will pay over 7k extra for the merc, when the new 5 will arguably be a better car and 7k ish cheaper?

    45,200 euro buys a manual 518d.
An auto 520d is just over 50k on the road, plus another 500 for service pack which is standard now on the merc so 50500.
That makes the gap a lot smaller.
I agree the new 5 will be a lot closer to the e class, I just think the new e is a much more competitive prospect and streets ahaead of an Audi A6 or Jag xf

I'd love to see the Mercedes Ireland maths for Comand Online pricing. The model I have its a £999 option in the UK, it was €6200 here!!! (That's not a typo, €6200)

In the out going model Comand was made standard around the face lift in the UK, though they didnt get the option for have the traditional front, only the large star grill.

The new E class is the business to be fair.
I expect the new 5 series to be up there too but I fear the 5 is going to be common as muck. The E class will likely be much more rare given the way mercedes go about offering finance.

Shame the one Bob is in below is bogo spec, the blue one you catch a glimpse of around the 50 second mark looks phenomenal.

The one he's in look incredibly meh.

The silver one in that review is not the best.
It looks better in grey or black.
Dealer had one in "citrine brown" which would be a brave choice.
If I was in the market for this class of car I would have one of these now over the opposition. Never thought I would say that begore

A new model E-Class stopped next to me on the M50 yesterday morning - Silver as well.

I looked at it, figured out it was a new E-Class went it got slightly ahead and I saw the badge on the back, and thought "that's utter uninspiring", then carried on without giving it a second glance.

Sure we'll see a few coming through here (first order was collected straight from the dealer), and hopefully it's better up close than it looks from a short distance away.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,742 ✭✭✭carsfan2

For me, the interior( think mini s class) and the actual drive of the car was a lot more impressive than the looks.
However the amg model on 20" alloys I've seen in pictures is a good looker.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,468 ✭✭✭ofcork

Merc are similar to bmw i think in so far as if you dont get AMG spec or m sport the car doesnt look as good,of course all the ads have the best looking models!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,763 ✭✭✭Phil.x

C class is very nice as well.

Mercs are really coming out with great cars, S class coupe....Hubba hubba.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,795 ✭✭✭✭mickdw

The recent C Class coupe is stunning with the right spec too.
I think this new E class is the business.

New one here in town in the silver/blue still don't know what to make of it. Distinctive though which makes a change from a lot of the other German marques.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,288 ✭✭✭millington

Don't like the back of them and the front is meh. The last more angular styled model was brilliant looking in AMG version. Interior looks good though definitely an improvement.

Still be a fight between the A6 & the 520d for me although both are a bit long in the tooth, the A6 has been updated a bit better than the F10.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 448 ✭✭WacoKid

    Gangsta car of choice:
    • Was Lexus IS200
    • Is BMW E60 5 Series
    • Will be Audi A6

Having an E60 can't wait to get out of it for this reason but won't be jumping into an Audi A6 soon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,795 ✭✭✭✭mickdw

Mercedes really have smartened up their line up.
In my memory, the c class was rarely a car to trouble 3 series and the e class was for old men while everyone wanted a 5 series.
Now mercedes across the board have jumped ahead.
Imo A class is more desirable than audi a3, bmw 1.
C class looks fantastic and personally id have one before a current 3 series or the latest A4.
E class is streets ahead of both outgoing 5 series and A6
S class is in a class of its own.

Not a fan of the Russian doll approach to styling a car range, but if your going down that direction then the S class is a decent template....

Agreed, the S is a decent starting point. The approach is good in the sense that the brand has a common theme, and you can immediately recognise a specific brand in all shapes and sizes (although the Korean brands muddy the waters trying to look like Ford and the like).

That aside, my biggest problem wit the Russian doll idea, and in particular with Audi's of late is that the A4 is a lovely car I'm sure, but it's biggest problem is that it ISN'T an A6.

I presume he was talking about the AMG spec (AMG line?) model.

I was looking forward to seeing one in the flesh. Have been following development as I really like the c-class and liked the outgoing e-class, post-facelift. However, any that I have seen to date seem to have had poverty spec and do look uninspiring as others have said. I would like to see an AMG spec model in black - the multi-spoke wheels in particular look attractive.

All the reviews have been good - though many review models seem to have had the optional air suspension fitted. There seems to be a lot less vibration from the motor and is, I believe, matched to a new 9-speed box. Both seem to come in for high praise.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,863 ✭✭✭RobAMerc

I like it, what I dont like is that irs absolutely impossible to tell the difference between the C e and S now days allthought all can look good.

I had a W211 which was a terrible car in the 1.8 kompresor guise, replaced it with a w221 S class which is superb, and have on 3 occasions had a 212 e class as rentals - I now have a BMW f10 which is far superior to both e classes I have driven. Also bar the quality of the interior the 5 isnt a million miles off the S class for comfort and refinement and doesnt feel a lot smaller than it either.

Yeah the car comes in three lines- avantgarde, exclusive and AMG.
Avantgarde is the cheapest but still loaded,I have to laugh when I hear "poverty spec" as it really wants for nothing. You're not exactly talking keep fit windows.
you can mix and match elements of the lines too. For example you can have AMG exterior with avantgarde interior or exclusive interior etc.

There should be a Mercedes-AMG E43 next year. Hopefully they'll fit it with their eagerly anticipated straight six. It's disappointing that there's still no sign of a straight six being launched, considering that the rumours have been going around for nearly five years now, and the E220d's engine is a derivative of the forthcoming six cylinder diesel unit.

Ah, apologies, the AMG styling pack, not the AMG models, right.

All the AMG 43 models are getting a V6 Biturbo. Imagine the E43 will be a rare sight here, I'd expect it to be similar price to the C63S.

Also the 43 models aren't technically proper AMG models, they are the old AMG Sport models renamed. None of them will have the bespoke engine the proper AMGs do. It's bit like BMW calling an M Sport a proper M car, or a S line Audi a RS model.

You must have officially reached 'mercedes age' - mid 50s or early 60s?

Yeah the 43 AMG models are meant to be equivalent to Audi's S models and BMW's M Performance ones.

What will be the first Merc with a proper six pot, then? The current model E-class was supposed to be the launch car for the six cylinder engines in the correct layout after all.

You've probably seen this already mick, but the car is definitely more impressive in a higher spec.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,795 ✭✭✭✭mickdw

The car is impressive in general. A 6 cylinder with air suspension and amg kit would be the job.
alot of interesting stuff around now.
    BMW 530e coming, c350e etc.

Pretty sure it's the C43. I think Europe had the C450 saloon for a brief period, it's now been renamed the C43. There's a C43 coupe to follow, then SLC43, GLC43 and the E43

Pity we'll see hardly any like that on Irish roads. The entry spec is no where near it.

At this stage of the year I would guess most are waiting for July if they are buying one.
Expect to see more from then on.

My buddy is in UK at the moment and he has one as rental E220 cdi must ask him what he makes of it. Dont think its a top spec one or that but still prob not bad.

Passed one on the M50 on the way home. Only tell it's not a C Class because of the E220d badge on the back.

Grey Metallic, almost made me fall asleep it was so bland.

Finally saw one today. Tail lights just looked odd. Loved what I saw in the promo, but this one was really drab in the metal.

Not exactly indicative of the quality of them as a whole.

The autonomous driving features look amazing, but of course noone will spec that system.
