Planting trees imo is best done bareroot (you can see the root), in winter (start of Nov to end of Feb) on a dry day when the ground is damp and not frozen. Buy your trees at the start of the season and get the pick of the crop.

Planting a tree that has been in a pot has its dangers. How was the pot cared for before you bought it? Have the trees roots already started the potbound process? Are you buying a potted up recently bareroot tree? potted trees need more watering in their first season imo. Saying that potted trees can do fine if looked after.
