I have a Toshiba laptop for the last 3 years. for the last 4 weeks whenever I log onto online banking, I cant type in my numerical password; every time I hit a number button (either the numbers on the right side of keyboard or the row of numbers across the top) a number AND a letter appear. I've tried using the fn button along with every other button! also the shift button, the alt button etc.
i've rang the technical support online banking number and they said it was my laptop that was the problem.
Can anyone shed some light on this before I loose my tiny mind!!

If you go in to Word or Notepad and type with these keys does the text appear as required?

It seems to be working fine for everything else, word, emails etc.

Try a different web browser and see if you are still having the issue.

how do you know that a number & letter are going in? normally when you login to online banking, you get stars: **** as you type.

What happens if you use the on-screen keyboard?

For initial log in, i give my customer number and that has always appeared on screen and stayed.

ok, so that means you can post a screenshot of what it looks like if you type in 123456.

What happens with the onscreen keyboard?

When ever it relates to online banking "acting funny" I immediately think virus/malware.

So as someone else suggested try a different browser, if that works contact you bank and change your codes immediately. Personally at this point I would re-image the laptop.

Because it is just on this website it is very unlikely to be hardware related, now unless you are running an ancient browser, which any decent banking site should block. I would think this has to be malware.

There is an option of a pop up keyboard which is provided by kaspersky security. It works when i use that but i usually never use it. Like i just want to know why my keyboard wont type the numbers only.

It has to be a software problem on your computer. I would change your codes as a precaution (don't think it's an issue, but no harm). Once you've done that, run msconfig and choose to edit your startup items. Disable everything, and reboot your computer. This will stop any extra applications from loading on startup, including any antivirus applications.

Once you've done that, and restarted, tick the box to acknowledge you've amended your startup, and try your banking again.

If it works fine, then it's some program you're running. You can start enabling the programs you think might be causing the issue, until you find it.

The on-screen keyboard is in the ease of access center in the control panel.

What we are trying to do is troubleshoot the issue, to eventually arrive at a resolution.

I'm not sure about the malware/virus suggestion, if I was going to try and create a virus to collect bank login details, surely I would need to allow the person to actually login?

rebuilding the machine is an option, but maybe a lot of work for the OP.
If it was my machine, and I had a spare harddrive, I would definately give it a whirl.

Contacted Ulster Bank, they told me to un- install their security browser 'trustee report' and re- install it.
Will try what people suggested here also. Thanks very much!
