Manual push lawnmowers. Any good?

My electric lawnmower finally gave up the ghost and needs to be replaced. I'm not keen on getting another electric mower. I am considering getting one of those many, self-powered, push lawnmowers. Are they any good?

Depends on the size of your lawn/s. A non self propelled petrol lawnmower is more than adequate for the size of lawns that accompany the average semi-d. Anything bigger than that and I would go for a self propelled. If you get a lawnmower that mulches as it cuts you wouldn't have to bother disposing of grass, and you wouldn't be degrading the fertility of the lawn.

The electric has the advantage of being pretty much a fire and forget appliance, your only real worry is perhaps keeping the blade(s) sharp, with a petrol lawnmower you have spark plugs, oil, ignition system, all more kinds of things that can go wrong, they are ideally suited for a larger garden where electric wouldn't be practical.

I live in a semi-d but the front and rear gardens would be smaller than your average semi-d.

The front is probably 10ft x 7ft, which the back is about 10ft x 12ft.

I'm wondering if something like this would be any good to keep that much space tidy?

Petrol lawnmower maintenance is easy, just a few basic things to remember. Wrangling with electric cord and avoiding mowing it is a pain. Half the time you spend moving the cord out of the way, and for grass that on the long side they really struggle to deal with it.

With that size I would go electric all the way, those manuals are a complete pain in the hole to use and if there's uneven ground or dampness they don't run at all.

I might buy one for my wife :pac: It would get the job done...eventually. Good exercise though.

Hi, have my manual one a few years. Went for it this year and it will not go forward. Usually something stuck between the blades that prevent this - but nothing there. simply wont move. Any ideas much appreciated

I'd never go back to petrol. Damn things break down when u most need them and left in for repair for weeks

I've a big area and electric does job

An issue is if the lawn grows too much and is damp all the time ya can be in bother

Used one for a season. Next year it wouldn't cut at all; looked at the faff to sharpen the blades and bought an electric instead.

One of my neighbours has had a push lawnmower for many years. He's always out cutting the lawn - maybe it's necessary with the push type? Our estate has very small gardens and most of our neighbours use electric mowers but noticed another couple of the push type this year. They look manageable when it's for a small lawn. Good exercise too!
