I've not thought about state benefit for a long time... I'm being redundant in a few weeks and my dad said because I've been paying my stamps ( no idea what he means ) that I'll get a little more money then the normal.

I've no idea what he's talking about.. I've been working full time for about 7 years and in the last 15 years I've only been on the dole once for 5 weeks.. So paying all normal taxes

Does anyone know what he means? Is it true ?

    Any info would be great

    Thanks

I'm not sure you'll get "anymore", I was made redundant in 2007. First time after 12 years working I looked for assistance. Within 6 weeks of "drawing my stamps" I was being sent letters from social welfare suggesting this job and that job.

Made me wonder how the long term unemployed dealt with the social welfare's help !!

Probably what he meant is you should be entitled to JSB which is based on your PRSI contributions and is €188.

On the otherhand if you only get JSA thats means tested so it can be anything up to €188

    ^^^^^^
    That's essentially it, yes.

Jobseekers Benefit is based on your stamps. More stamps, more money. Jobseekers Allowance is means tested, you won't get it if you've means (or at least it'll be reduced)

They call them stamps because there was a time where you would actually get a stamp for every social insurance contribution you made. That stopped in the late 70's I would say.

More stamps unfortunately no longer means more money! I'm guessing that's why they changed PRSI to USC, (Pay related social insurance?).

JSB is around €188, with an extra €124 if you have an adult dependent, not sure what else is available.

JSB is also considered taxable income these days.

OP from your post I'd expect you be allowed JSB for about 9 months, before you will have to move onto the means tested JSA. If you receive over €50,000 in redundancy your first few weeks of JSB may also be taken off you!

edit. there is a reduced payment if your income was low (but you would effectively have to be in a part time job to be affected)

Average weekly earnings Personal rate Increase for a qualified adult Increase for a qualified child
    Less than €150______________€84.50______________€80.90_______________€29.80

    €150 - €219.99_____________€121.40
    €220 - €299.99_____________€147.30
    €300 or more_______________€188______________€124.80

They didn't "change" PRSI toUSC. We pay both
