We keep suckler cows. This year we had a lot of hard calfings due too much condition on the cows. We had good quality silage around 73 dmd and the cows fed adlib . This year i am either going to buy straw in and feed three days straw three days silage or would i be better splitting bales and feeding only the amount i want to give them.

the straw works best as it keeps the noise down a bit rather than the roars of hungry cows.

Is it pit or bale silage. If bale silage cut silage for cows 7-14 days later get it down to 65-68dmd. Heavier crop cheaper/ kg cost to produce, no straws to buy why add cost what reinvent the wheel. Disadvantage after grass will take 6-10 days longer from cutting date and cutting date is delayed as well. So after grass maybe 14-21 days later.

Suckler cows here never see a bite of silage till a week or two before calving.Hay and minerals only maybe 1kg oats at times.cows never go over fat and no mixing silage and straw or feeding poor overgrown silage. Not sure what part of the country your from but good quality stuff can be got delivered in the yard for 25 bale.Filled two barns with 2014 hay this year for 15/bale in the yard.
