Hi does any know of any reputable jewellers in wexford town or waterford city that provide a service for checking the authenticity of expensive watches and providing a certificate of authenticity? Preferably wexford town as we live in wexford. We have a Chanel watch that we want to get checked before trying to sell it.

    Dublin only I'd say.....

    http://www.chanel.com/en_WW/Watches#storelocator_wfj

    Appleby's or BT

You might find a 2nd hand dealer, but I suspect you'd be better off with a card stamped by a Chanel AD. They will charge for a valuation - €50?

The list price and the price offered for your watch may be very different.

Would you trust BT with checking authenticity?

Not in a fit! They don't have a qualified watchmaker or service department in store. You're best bet in Dublin would be Dawson jewellers probably who will actually open the watch and inspect the movement and who would be experienced in looking at the genuine article vs a well made replica. They will of course charge for their services.

Is that any good really? as it is not an authorised dealer they wont want officially to verify anything even at a price.
Its more than a movement for a Chanel watch as it is a fashion item. Therefore finish, bracelet and case may be in question something an AD could verify but a dealer may not have sufficient knowledge to verify.

If you can try to find out where it was purchased unless you have a very good friend in a reputable jewellers.

Thanks everyone..that was really helpful. We will probably get it done at dawsons or the chanel store at brown thomas. I've attached a pic of the watch.

Why are you concerned about it being real?

I'm pretty sure it's real and expensive but probably just handier to give buyers more confidence if I can get it authenticated I would guess:)

Where did you get it and what did you pay?

I honestly believe BT won't have the ability to do this, and secondly won't offer the service either way.

Also a tough sell in Ireland.

My mother got it as a gift. I already have it up on ebay as I find that's the best platform to sell expensive items. We sold a Cartier watch to someone in america for 9k not that long ago on ebay. I have the chanel watch up for around 10k but will happily take anywhere around the 7k region.

Best of luck getting €10k for a watch you think "might" be genuine (yet you've already claimed that it is genuine on your eBay listing) with no box or paperwork and some fairly awful photos.
I'm not doubting you, just playing devils advocate and looking at it from a buyers perspective.
Why not ask your mother to get a valuation from whoever bought it as a gift? Do you have the original box and papers? That will seriously affect the value if not? If it was bought from an Irish authorised dealer it should be fairly easy to get a reprint of the receipt. They don't sell too many of them here!

Who bought it for you mother? Is it likely that they could afford to give her a 10k plus watch. Did it have papers when she got it?

You already know if it's real or not.

My mother told me it's real and she's big into her jewelry so I trust her judgement. I took those pics from my phone...their not that bad lol No all we have is the watch but we've already contacted dawson jewellers and will get it done there. Have a returns policy up too so it's all good.

It was my mothers sister that gave it to her and she's wealthy that's for sure. I'm confident we will get offers for the watch...it's whether there will be silly or serious offers lol

I don't think eBay would be the best platform for selling a high value item. Too much fraud and claims of goods never arriving.

Ebay is OK D and fees would be far less than with an auctioneer and you're also likely to get more than with a dealer. They do protect the buyer more mind you so if selling big ticket items every precaution needs taking.

That said selling a big ticket item of jewellery, jewellery that is faked every day of the week, without papers and box and with laughably bad, out of focus and taken in a cupboard photos is unlikely to work. Or you'd have to find the most gullible buyer on earth as the vast majority would steer clear of such a sale thinking it a scam. I mean if you want ten grand for something surely you can work up to half way decent photos?

Thanks for all the advice. I will surely take it all on board:) Time will tell whether this watch will sell. I like ebay and find it's very safe as long as you keep everything within the ebay platform. If you start using outside emails and all that then that's how you can easily get scammed and ebay have the buyer protection scheme and paypal has something similar. I couldn't think of a better platform with high traffic than ebay to sell the watch.

I will definitely take better pictures and put them up asap.

Yeah the pics need improving alright. Put it another way it has been photos like that where I've found real bargains as a buyer in no reserve auctions. Not so good for a seller. Especially for an item like that and especially when other sellers are looking for near half the money with far fancier photos and presentation.

I suggested BT because they're listed by Chanel - no other reason. If they can't help, they'd know someone who could.....it might even have been purchased there.

You would think so......I doubt it though. Infact I would wager that not a single one of the staff would have the capability to 1) open the case back or 2) assess the authenticity of the movement!

I am also unsure of where you think they are going to direct you apart from obvious jewellers.

If it were me I think I would find out if Chanel would service the watch. you then would have some verification from the manufacturer that would reassure a potential purchaser.
For the kind of money your talking it shouldn't be overly extravagant.
