Like a good boy I changed the timing belt on my tdi golf when I was supposed to. Not at a dealership but with well reputed local mechanic.. Belt has now snapped at around 8000 miles later..
Bit freaked out about how much damage could be done and also I'm fairly certain he should make it right no?

depends on what caused the belt to break
if the belt just failed you might have a case but if something else caused the belt to break then unlikely,

if the garage accepts liability and it is unlikely. they would be responsible for parts fitted and work done only.

Bring car back to them anyway and let them check it out

I wonder if they cheaped out and didn't replace the tensioner or idler pulleys. These getting stuck will cause the belt to snap too.

That is likey as you can get cheap timing belt vs timing belt kit that cost a bit more.
