Job Offer - Not Sure What To Do

    Hi,

I've a job offer atm, and not sure whether to accept it or not. I'm currently working in a very similar role (80% of the job is the same), so it's really just a sideways step, and with very similar potential for career progression. The new job are offering me a good bit more money (assuming I get bonuses in both jobs 44k vs 35k). They don't have health insurance whereas I do get an excellent package off current company, and pension contributions would be less (10% vs 5%), and I'd only get the pension after 18 months but currently would have one. Free food in the new company too, so would save money there. That's the financial aspect of it.

Other aspects and this is where I'm struggling on are that I've got good friends in my current company, my manager is sound and I actually quite like working there as the people are so nice. That could be the case in the new place but I don't know that until I'd actually be working there so it's a risk.

Then about me, I suffer with depression, and have in the past attempted to kill myself. 3 years ago I was at a place where I wasn't even capable of working, and the current company has helped me a good bit in getting more confident and stronger. I feel important there and like they rely on me a bit, and only reason I'm even considering moving is due to them underpaying in comparison the market.

I'm afraid I'll regret either decision I make, so am really confused on what to do, and could use some guidance if anyone can help. My gut is to stay but then it's very hard to turn down a higher paid job, even if it is a sideways move.

Best way to boil it down - where do you feel happier?

I'm happy atm, but underpaid which annoys me, but it's what the company pay. New place seemed ok, but don't really know fully until I'd be working there so is a risk that I mightn't get on as well

Could you tell your existing employers about the offer of the new job. Show them the terms they are offering but say you would prefer to stay. The existing job might not match the salary but they might increase your salary and benefits somewhat to keep you.

Others have tried that before and it's never worked, company don't really counter offer. I'd also be worried that if I did that and stayed, manager might be reluctant to do me any favours or give me the best projects as I'd have already shown I'm considering leaving

what is the chance of promotion in your current company? is progression something you see yourself striving for in the near future?

tbh you sound like you're in a good company where you are with employers/friends that you're happy with. only you can decide if you'd be happy moving.
if it was me, i'd personally stay put and see how things progress. but in the end it's your decision. i wish you the best with it.

One in the hand is with two in the bush.

9k pay difference is massively offset by health insurance and the pension deal. You are probably only looking at 4k gross so 2.5k net really. Which in reality is nothing. I wouldn't want to be eating bulk prepared food everyday either so wouldn't even see this offering as a positive. My company got rid of our canteen about 2 years ago and everyone's health has improved, ( proven by company medical) as a result.

Definitely stay where you are would be my advice. You are very lucky to be happy where you are.

    Best of luck

I have often toyed with the idea of taking a job closer to home to cut out all the travelling I do. What has stopped me has always been how happy I am where I'm working .
I love my school, the children and the staff. Whilst I could definitely find another school that I will love and make friends, there's also a huge chance that I could be miserable and be in a school that has a complete different atmosphere.
I really think happiness is something you can't put a price on. For me an hour(maybe longer) commute to my job is worth it because I'm happy
I'm also aware that my circumstances could change in years to come and might want to move closer to home , but at this very moment in time I'm happy with my decision.
Ask yourself where you'll be happiest, as another poster mentioned-after everything is taken into account , would 2.5k be worth it?

Rejected the position anyway there. Might end up regretting it, but just don't feel ready to move on. Thanks everyone for your responses

just saw this now and was actually going to advise you to stay put and i'm glad you did, your health especially mental health is way more important than an extra 10k net per year, break it down, what do you really get extra for that? everything is a risk, sometimes its good sometimes its bad but if you are really happy in a place, especially if it helps your mental health then defo stay put, you sound like your on a decent wage so its not like your on the poverty line, maybe in your next review see about getting a rise, but as i say there are far more important things than money such as your health, being happy in the place you spend 8/10 hours a day, happy with the people your with...well done on making a good decision ;)

Your mental health is the priority. I think you made the right decision.
