When a dealer takes delivery of a new car, how long does it take to get a reg number for it? Is it a simple online process these days or is it done through the post (i.e. need to wait longer)?

    Thanks in advance.

Takes a few minutes. Dealer submits the registration, then gets a PDF rf100a file which has the reg number in it.
After the car arrives, the garage needs to do a pre delivery inspection and valet it before it goes out.
If there's finance that needs to be sorted too.

Dealer does it online as soon as he gets the car in, and gets the reg no. which he can give you straight away to sort out insurance in advance if necessary. The next day the car can be taxed by you online using the registration number and the last 6 digits of the VIN as the pin code.

I know, as I did it yesterday :)
