98 toyota corolla backfiring

    hi guys,

just a question relating to a 98 Toyota Corolla automatic which has recently started to backfire on starting, and between 60 and 80 kmph on the road.

It is a bit spluttery on starting also.

A few months ago I replaced the ignition leads with leads I got at a breakers yard.

Also, some oil managed to leak into one of the sparkplug cylinders around the same time, so I replaced the plugs and cleaned inside each cylinder, that was about 4 months ago.

I would be keen to get to the bottom of the backfiring issue as the car passed the NCT today.

A local garage said that it had something to do with a thing which is near the timing belt in automatic cars which is old and worn out, and he could sort it next week.

Any thing I searched for on Google seemed to point at the spark plugs, ignition leads and maybe coil set.

    Any suggestions welcome...

    thanks

    crank or cam position sensor?

    crank or cam position sensor?

I wonder would the position of the crank or cam sensor be different in an automatic as one of these is usually attached to the fly-wheel. The local breakers have 4 corrollas around that vintage but have difficulty in locating the sensors.

    Thanks for the reply btw.
