I see Nissan now owns 40% of Mitsubushi Motors now.
That makes them the majority shareholder, Mitsubishi heavy industries owns 20%
I wonder what this will mean for future models, MMC have been in financial trouble for a good while now, and their current European lineup is very stale, the current Pajero is out 16 years now.

Nissans exposing of Mitsubishis emissions shenanigans earlier in the year and the subsequent collapse of share prices seems to have been for a reason?

Probably won't make much difference in Europe given that Renault, Nissan and Dacia are under the one corporate umbrella. Unless they decide that Mitsubishi will be their new sporty brand and invest heavily in a new model range.

Cannot see them doing that though, I'd say it's more towards increasing their foothold in the Asian and developing markets where Mitsubishi still has a well branded name. I wonder would Dacia models eventually find their way over there wearing Mitsubishi badges?

Great move buying it now when the price collapsed after their recent emissions scandal.

it was Nissan that lifted the lid on the emissions though as Mitsubishi was making microcars for them.

Would it not be Renault models wearing Mitsubishi badges?

Mitsubishi are more a budget brand these days in Asia so to me it would make sense to badge re-engineer Dacias that are already sold here.

Nah. they're out since 2000. even with 3.2 DI-D engine.
thayve facelifted it a few times but it's still the same yoke.

Yeah the Pajero is woefully outdated, consider that Toyota and Land Rover have both introduced two new models in the time the Paj is on sale.

Mitsubishi haven't had much in the way of sales here outside of the 4x4 sector and the colt tbh, so I see it merging more with the Nissault group unfortunately, where for some reason Japanese design goes with French build quality, instead of the other way around.

They'll finally be able to have a Qashqai rival ;)

    .

Not sure you can hold Land Rover up as a pillar of progress, the outgoing defender is nearly as old as me and even then its all basically 70 years old :D

Like all underdogs I'm drawn to Mitsubishi even though I really shouldn't. The diesel in the Lancer was apparently a great drive before it was detuned. The ASX has a nice interior refresh but admittedly I haven't actually sat into one.

I was referring to the Discovery, should have clarified..

I have a sandwich that's more advanced than a Defender

Yeah , I know, just a defender based joke. We can never have enough of those.

FWIW I dont like the new Disco. Its too small and delicate looking. Much like the Evoque.

Do you mean the Discovery Sport, that's a Freelander replacement. Current Discovery still on sale.

    Either way, Landcruiser ftw

The 3.2 is a bullet proof engine, quicker than all its rivals. Why change or improve as it didn't need to? It would leave a cruiser for dead. That 3.2 engine with the super select 4wd made it a serious machine for towing.

Do they sell many Pajeros these days, haven't seen a new one in a long time? Years ago before the boom when developers switched to Landcruisers, nearly every second 4x4 was a Pajaro and the rest were Troopers.

The Pajaro these days seems outdated and very expensive.

The airport near me bought a few 161s, they seem to be nicely kitted out, leather, satnav etc assuming it's all standard on them these days. Army still buying them too AFAIK.
I don't think the 5 seat commercial is that dear.

No doubt it has plenty of power, and super select is a decent system, but early manual gearboxes were made of cheese, so the auto was the only game in town. they improved after about 06. Alao some people bought the 2.5, which I believe is still undergoing its 0-60 test...I didn't find my friend's 04 one very comfortable, despite it being top of the range with leather etc. It also shat a flywheel at 80k.

I just don't think addding tarty LED tail lights, New headlights and interior gizmos is enough of an update in 16 years

3.2l and only 162bhp? Get out of town. That's pants.

VW have more horsies and torque in the Amarok from a 2l Diesel.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,528 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

yeah the father in laws one needed a flywheel early on too despite never being used for anything remotely tough.
The 2.5 was painful alright. I had one from work years ago, but the 3.2 is a rocket in comparison - especially the more recent 200hp models.
Never drove the newer one off road but had a 2.8 LWB older model and I found the 4wd very good. it had a rear diff lock too which you but don't see on Irish land cruisers.

The 3.2 never needed a dual mass as it has a sprung clutch disc. The solid conversion were a super job or for the lad on a budget weld and balance the dmf.

There is a new one driving around where I live. Its a workhorse and that is what they are bought for to do a job tow trailers etc. I think it still looks good for what it is designed to do. So yes they still sell some but not nearly as many as they used to sell.

Well if we're going apples and apples TDV6 in the Disco is 250bhp and 600Nm of torque.

Still seems a bit old hat.

Aside from the venerable Pajero, you have the Space Star. A rebadged developing-nations Mirage, hopelessly outdated from launch, a step back from the Colt it replaced, then you have the Lancer, a car from 2007 which wasn't anywhere near a class leader when it was launched, the ASX which is the same idea,
The outlander PHEV is probably the most advanced car they're selling here.
The I-MIEV is just a joke car. I don't think anybody apart from the ESB ever bought one. (There's been 1 sold since 2012, I think the ESB got 15 of them in 2010) Another old model (2009), these used to be something crazy like €35k, they've chopped the price to nearer €20k now but it's a tiny car with limited appeal.

There's a few PHEVs out here, local Mitsubishi dealer is selling a few of them.

The Lancer is a great second hand buy do. The sister bought one recently a 2008 for 5k and her bf got a 2010 Lancer hatchback for 6k. They are both still like new. Yes the materials inside are a bit hard but at least they do not scratch easy and will still be good in ten years time. They are stylish too
