Maybe I should add, the article is LONG. Personally, I found it really interesting. The guy says at one stage, "We know nothing about the science of long distance running" and I think that's close to the truth.

To give you an idea also, they're working with runners like Bekele; this ain't no joke shop project.

Thought this was on the 800m, so quite disappointed. :( Sub 2 or not. What the top guys are doing at the marathon is incredible. The world record is equivalent to running 104 69s laps of the track back to back. Hard to fathom really.

Yeah, I could've made the title clearer. KU, I haven't been following your log (are you still logging?) but a thing I saw on Strava just today got me wondering about track distances. A fairly classy lad here in Lux (10,000 pb, just under 30) posted a workout where he did 13 of 20k at Threshold pace all on the track. Jeez, it seems like an awful long workout on the track, warm up and cool down and all. Almost certainly on his tod too.

Do 5k/10k runners that you know do long workouts like that on track or road?

Yea I still intermittently log but its probably somewhere back on page 9 or 10 by this stage.

Don't know anyone who would do long tempo/threshold stuff like that on the track. At Crusaders, we tend to do that kind of stuff in the park although I would do a lot of mine on the road for convenience sake. I do see Jebuz posting some long tempo stuff on the track with Leevale so seems to be more of a done thing down there. Wouldn't see much harm in it, although it might be a bit head wrecking. Sounds like he's the kind of guy that would be doing a lot of 10,000m races on the track so maybe those type of sessions help with the mental monotony.

I do a lot of long tempo on the track. I have done a few 12 mile marathon pace runs and loads of 3 4 and 5 mile runs. I like it beca use its so easy to track and maintain the proper pace.

There is that for sure. Must be a bit of a head wrecker doing 20 k though. Maybe you get used to it.

I've a 500m crushed gravel track near my house where I done a 16m progression run 4-4-4-4 when it was windy, almost 50 laps
