Will this website actually send you a legally recognised copy of your birth cert? I ordered one but then immediately realised that it's almost definitely a scam... Someone please assuage me!

You will probably get the cert. While it's not the official site, it looks like a site where they apply for the cert on your behalf for a fee.
How much did you pay for the cert?

It's not a scam you are just paying far too much for something you could order directly from the General Registry Office.

www.birthsmarriagesdeaths.ie charge €40 for a certificate whereas www.certificates.ie (the Government website) charge €20.

Birthsmarriagesdeaths.ie are just ordering it from the GRO on your behalf, posting it to you and for this they charge an extra €20.

I was in the General Register Office in Townsend St recently to get copies of my own birth cert. I was second in the queue and it took 5 minutes, 3 of which were spent with him explaining why my birth cert doesn't have my surname on it.

The other point of note in this is that the new birth certs that are issued look like something that would be well within the reach of an amateur Microsoft Paint enthusiast, which might have lead the OP to thinking it was a scam document.

Despite them actually being more secure and less error-prone than the old re-written copies (they're scans/reprints of the actual original register entry).

But I do get what you mean - had to get replacements for the ones my parents left in a pointless safe at home that was the only thing other than a car taken in a burglary - and they do look rather simplistic. UK ones are much the same now.

    Is Marcusm a mononym? :P

    I paid €40. Ah well!

No it's just that the old birth certs showed surname for father and mother but none for child. That's been transposed to the new cert and it comes accompanied by a written statement explaining that fact. 'Twas a bit of a surreal explanation in person although fairly understandable.

It arrived and whereas the one I misplaced was quite large, this new one is A4 and you can barely even see what it says :/ I hope that won't be an issue when I'm using it.

That is the new standard. The actual text area is much the same - and is a direct copy of the actual register
