    Hi folks,

Was looking at a friend's yaris this morning. Dipstick bone dry, literally. Serviced in Feb. I've had to top this baby up probably 3 times in 12mths for her. Have they a reputation for using oil ? One would presume that it was refilled at service 10weeks ago to the correct level. No signs of leaks anywhere. Block & undercarriage/sump all spotless. No issues driving, no exhaust tell tale signs. Is it just model itself ? Just stuck 1.5ltrs in to bring it to midway point on stick.

All Petrol vvti engines from 00 - 08 were prone to burning (drinking) oil. A fault with the engine block apparently, Toyota did replace engines while the car was under warranty but I've heard of those engines giving the same problem after 50-60k. I'm just speaking from experience with a car I had the same issue with (avensis 1.6 vvti) and the research I done at the time, I'm sure someone with more knowledge on it will b along shortly

The main design issue with those VVTis is in the piston crowns and rings. In short, the rings don't seal quite as well as they should and the crown oil passageways aren't quite adequate, causing hot oil to hang around the usual hot-spots, sludging and eventually burning. The reason Toyota were replacing engine blocks was because of the Nikasil bore-liners - carbon deposits due to the oil problem would wear them faster and they can't be replaced or re-bored.

    OP, if I were you I'd start using a good-quality branded 5W-30 full-synth, ACEA A3/B4 or C3.
