Got paid extra maternity benefit will work find out?

Am panicking here I'm really crap with tax & money matters basically I'm only after finding out that I have been getting €340 in Maternity benefit but work were only deducting €230 from my pay. I had assumed they were deducting the correct amount. (I get paid Maternity Leave)

I got extra as my husband is a stay at home dad it asked on the maternity benefit form so I did fill it out correctly!

I thought alright I had a bit extra in my account each month but I put it down to saving money on petrol whilst I was off (I have a really long commute so it is substantial)

I obviously don't have all this money any more and now I'm freaking out that my employer will know I was getting extra money but didn't tell them so that they could deduct my pay. I didn't do it on purpose & have only just found out.

Will work find out,? Should I tell them or say nothing?

Have a look at this. I think they can only deduct you €230 cause the rest is for your dependants ... Maybe get on to citizens advice

Or maybe in wrong maybe your supposed to tell them... You've two choices don't tell them and they may or may not find out... Or two then and if you owe it ask if you can pay it back in increments... It won't be looked favourably on you if you hide it and it's found out... Can't believe you didn't see the €340 going Int your bank acc it's an extra €110 a week x 26 = €2860 if I'm correct ( probably not) that wouldn't come from petrol savings and if you did know you had so ouch extra surely you couldn't have spent it?

Thanks Tracy, I did see that myself but I was on illness benefit for a few weeks before my mat leave & I had been sending them in a copy of my slip so they were deducting the correct (larger) amount then. So none the wiser.

But thanks I might just take your advice and go to citizens advice I can't sleep at night freaking about this

Go to citizens advice but if they should have taken it out tell them. If they find out they will be annoyed. Did you send anything in with the amount of your maternity pay into them? I always believe honesty is the best policy. Tell them you can't afford it all gone in one lump and ask them to take weekly/monthly deductions that will have you pay it back in a year/18 mths

I had so much going on at this time you have no idea! I get paid monthly and was getting the mat benefit weekly. Direct debits flying out of my account paying off loans etc. It was over Christmas then I got a bonus from work too. Like I said I knew there was extra money knocking around but so busy with new baby no sleep etc I just didn't think!
