your own car for test?

Do you need your own car for a test?

3rd provisional licence holder, haven't owned a car since 2010, failed the test at the time, but never got around to retesting and got rid of my car soon after (and just before new rules came in). I don't need 12 lessons.

Just got my date for my test and see that I need my own car! Were there test cars before ? This is crazy! How does it work for people with no car?? Will I have to borrow a car, get insured for a year only to use it one day for the test??? I am not in a financial position to even think about getting a car just yet, whatever about before my test!!! And in the field of work I am trying to get in now (after returning to college and studying 4 years for it) will favour people with full licences. I'm so disheartened! Trying to afford a test in the first place was tough enough and I could not get a 3rd renewal without proof of a test being booked!!

Also, how many lessons would you recommend for someone in my boat? I'm a good driver, but I just need to be confident in the test and get rid of bad habits like coasting! I am really hoping to pass this time so I can be in a better chance of finding work!! ANY advice much appreciated! Thank you

I don't believe there were ever test cars provided for the driving test. People without a car often borrow an instructor's car for the test (as I did for my own test). You are insured to drive it for the duration of the test, as you pay for the privilege (usually costs a bit more than a regular lesson).

As for the amount of lessons you should do yo brush up, I would be of the opinion that you should do a pretest with a good instructor to see where your weak points are, and get their professional opinion. They're in the best position to tell you how much practice you need.

As DA7800 said, you can rent instructor's car for the test. That's what I did too, I got a pre-test an hour before the test as well for €100 all in.

Ohh ok, that's grand so!! Thank you! I knew there was some way of doing the test without a car but went into a panic when it was written in bold letters on the info leaflet "You must provide your own vehicle". Panic over!!lol. I was in the NDLS exactly 3 weeks and 2 days ago today, and i still havent recieved my provisional licence. they said 5 to 8 working days ! This whole rigmarole has been a total pain in the ass. Trying to get through to someone on their helpline is a nightmare. it's almost as if I'm just not meant to drive... Nothing seems to be smooth sailing in this country, and dont get me started on rent prices!!! sorry!! rant over!
