Are all SIMs the same?

I have 2 unlocked phones, originally from the UK. One is quite old (SE K750i) and runs a prepay Vodafne chip. The other is an HTC Wildfire and works off a prepay Three SIM. The 3 SIM works in a 4G USB dongle too, but it won't work in the Sony.
Is it because its a 3G SIM and the phone isn't ?

Correct, Three SIMs from the last year or so don't work in 2G only phones.
Also if you ever have to change your Vodafone SIM you will encounter the same issue even though your current Vodafone SIM probably works in the 4G dongle if it accepts the same size.
