Following from a discussion of a speeding case in motors.

If a person is sentenced to a period of jail in the District Court for speeding etc, is the person taken straight away to jail or can they stay out by fixing recognisances so they can appeal?

an appeal can be entered that day and the penalty will then be stayed.
