Chimney hearth movement.

    Hi All

In the last couple of months the chimney hearth has started to come away from the fireplace.

Is this something I should be concerned with? I am in a subsidence area and it’s the first thought that crossed my mind.

What is the best way I can find out what is causing the issue?

    Thanks
    Barr

what type of house and floor do you have under the hearth. Some older hearths are just a piece of stone or poured concrete resting on top of the floor. I have seen plenty that are not really attached to anything and come easier be moved away from the back of the fireplace.

The house is less than 10 years old , standard end of terrace house. I seem to remember the flooring was wood when it was being built.

Would normal settling after 10 years cause a fireplace hearth to detach ?

Is the base plinth dropping into the floor? The way that surround is rotating away from the wall would suggest the plinth is dropping.

Any cracks or damage in the fireback itself?

IMO, its the chimney breast portion of the fitted fire place that is moved, the hearth looks fine as its perfectly // with flooring
It is supposed to be tied into the wall on both sides, usually with a metal strap.
Whats the hook for: tying up the horse!
    Did somebody pull it?

You need it fixed back and ensure that fire brick is properly sealed again

I'm not 100% sure how to check the base plinth but visually it seems ok.

There was a chuck of concrete that came way on the inside top corner where the hearth moved out. The rest of it seems fine.

The hooks were for the kids xmas stockings.

They are only held on by adhesive so the horse can't do much damage :pac:

Thats just a fire surround yeah... is it just screwed to the wall? Just screw it/bolt it back on before one of the kids pulls it down on themselves..
