Why is 'Against The Head ' geo-blocked on NI Freeview?

I noticed last night (Mon.) that RTE2's excellent rugby programme 'Against the Head' is not available via the NIMM ie. RTE2 on Freeview here in NI. I can't really understand this as it is 'in the clear' via Sky here in NI. It surely can't be a rights issue as matches shown were Pro 12 games covered by among others TG4 (available on NIMM) and BBCNI. The only other action was from the AIL Ulster Bank League final which was shown live on RTE2 on Sunday and was 'in the clear' on NIMM. Anyone any idea why this programme would be geo-blocked?

I'd suggest its down to copy clearance. But you'd think that it would be something RTE would sort out for all Ireland coverage. And as you say most of the programme will be taken up with games that appear on other PSB on the Island. AFAIK they all work together for Rugby Coverage.

    Is this not a contradiction?
Sky provided channels require a subscription (with Sky News an exception) and so are not 'in the clear'.

I believe you meant that RTÉ 2 is available in NI when using your subscribed Sky card. So you are paying for the privilege of viewing it.

Why then are some RTE1/2 programmes geo-blocked via Sky in NI e.g. Champions League/Home and Away to name but 2?

Rights issues. The Home and Away thing is extremely long running and dates back as far as when RTE first became available on what was still NTL in Northern Ireland, way back in 2000. It was, afaik the first ever geoblocking of a single programme within the UK and Ireland, but set the precedent.

Fair point and you are obviously correct but my point still stands as to why 'Against The Head' is geo-blocked on NIMM and yet the very same programme is 'in the clear' via Sky in NI.

It is odd and I think only RTÉ could answer it for you.
