Cockroach or Beetle?

    Found this lad outside house last night, big guy bout inch to inch and half long.

    Initially thought it was cockroach, but didn't think they got that big in Ireland. Looking later at the pic, his black shell makes me think beetle. Also he was ponderous enough walking around, I have this image in my head of cockroaches scurrying around a lot faster.

    Have you ponds or other water sources near you?
    It looks very water beetle-ish to me.

    Willow Beetle? (If found near trees)

    Common cockroaches (specifically the ones people don't like) are flatter and move like lightning.
