Cockroach or Beetle?

Initially thought it was cockroach, but didn't think they got that big in Ireland. Looking later at the pic, his black shell makes me think beetle. Also he was ponderous enough walking around, I have this image in my head of cockroaches scurrying around a lot faster.0
