Carbon wheel question

Took a punt off Adverts.ie on a set of carbon wheels, brand new and looked ok.

Put on a set of continentals (very tight) and went out for a spin. Front wheel relaxed and went out of true with a creaking noise every revolution. Got them retrued and back out again but went off again.

    Seen this on the front?

For the bin and hard to trust the rear which has stayed true. Anything worth salvaging the hubs?

Notified the seller but haven't heard anything back from them

Sorry to hear this, I've always been cautious of buying second hand carbon wheels. What make are they?

Spurious Chinese ones, loosely modeled on Zipp 303 built on Novatech hubs.

Im assuming you put on carbon specific brake pads? Looks like awful wear there?

They are matt on the brake surface and glossy for the rest. Carbon specific brake pads

As an aside, were the pads aligned properly? Looks like a pad was making contact with the tyre.

I have a set of chinese carbon wheels , look very similar to yours ,
After 3 years and close to 10k the back one started to fail , a 50mm crack on braking surface about 10mm in from edge .
Noticed it after SK tour Waterford . I'd say I overused brakes on a descent ( my friend overheated and burst tube coming down Mahon falls too )

They took all sort of abuse and I was never good to them ;)
Was going to order new rim and get rebuilt but was cheaper to just order replacement rear wheel , <€200

A friend of mine bought a set of Detec ( €1000ish ) and had one fail after 50km . It can happen any carbon wheel

Similar thing happened a planet x 60 mm rear wheel for me:

Wheel is still sitting there, hard to get my head around the idea of binning it

Can you recommend a good supplier for a replacement carbon rim ?

I recently damaged a brand new rear wheel but can't seem to find anyone who will only supply a rim so I can re use the hub

    Thanks
    Dono

Avoid most of the ebay sellers.

Try YISHUN aka Asian Cycle Express
    Hong Fu/UAM
    Light Bicyle

Thats the main ones I can think off straight of my head.
