Have to inject baby calves tomorrow before letting out.Have Covexin 10 but it was opened a fortnight ago to use on lambs and resealed straight after use with candle wax.Stored under proper conditions.
See on box it says 'use within 8 hrs of opening or discard' .....is this a new idea....often used drugs before that were resealed with candle wax.

As calves are too valuable to lose may buy new Covexin tomorrow before doing them and just use the existing one on sheep in time to come.Good best by date on it.

Interested to hear what others think of this 'use within 8 hrs' warning.

If I wasn't using the whole bottle, I'd use a seperate needle in the bottle,J'd store it for a short while after doing that
i'd imagine putting a dirty needle in to the vaccine would be a problem to storing it.

Agree with you on the point of putting dirty needle into vaccine....just wondering from memory, was this warning always there about using within 'x' hrs ?.....or have vaccines become more fragile effectiveness wise.

So would you discard the remaining vaccine altogether.

It'd be a brave man that'd tell you to use it, that'll have to be your decision.
The only time I'd reseal it is during the ram buying season and we'd vaccinate new rams on the day we'd buy them, unfortunately not every breeder bothers to vaccinate before sale and like weanling calves its stressfull for them to be taken from their comrades
but would always revaccinate them again when we'd be using a new bottle somewhere

I use Covexin 10 every year and throw out any excess. It'd say it's more to do with exposure to air rather that any issue with dirty needle. Not worth it.

realistically when a bottle is a vacuum as in you have taken out a few mls of air and vaccine the air that is going to get back into the bottle will be in quicker than you can get any candle wax on it.

Calves are too valuable to chance it
