Is it still possible to rent a bull for a season?
If so do you know anyone that does?
    What are prices..etc

There's a lad in Monaghan on done deal. I think it's 600 for a month or something like that. It's a big risk disease wise. I'd be more inclined to buy an old bull off a farmer and hang him up after your finished.

He'd want to be some bull and do some breeding for that type of money, I know a man that used to lease Bulls 500 for the season. He's a dealer though and you could end up bringing anything in.

How many cows/heifers do you have to go in calf.
Why would you risk your herds health status renting a used bull/troubadour.
Better off using AI or buying a pbr bull at the sales, running him with your herd and sending him to the factory after use.
No offence, but why the hell would anyone want to use a bull that has dipped his wick in every and any pot along the way.

The other choice is a speak easy as he is called. This is when you buy a non pedigree bull. Years ago a bull had to have a licence and often there was only a few in the locality.

Depending on what breed you are looking for go to a neighbour that has good yearling of them or at the mart. Some lads that sucklers have virtually pedigree bulls. The best choice might be an LM off a Hereford cow.

What I'd do would be to ring around the marts in your area on sale days and see if they have any bulls in. Plenty of lads just ship them off for cull value in a general sale.

I leased a bull one time off a dealer/farmer, turned out he was fresh out of a mart a grand Simmental, all he wanted to do was eat grass. I'd be wary of a farmer selling a breeding bull for cull value during the height of the breeding season.

I be wary as well also older bulls can be unsettled and dangerous if they move herds as they reassert dominance.

I paid 400 for about the 10 weeks . I don't think it's a lot against the cost of ai and the hassle of getting them in for it .

What happens if something happens to the bull while you have him rented and is he moved in on something like a b&b basis?

There was nothing on paper but I'd guess depending on what happened we would have to come to an agreement . I wouldn't think many of these bulls are worth more than factory price really . We just bought ours through the mart and sold him back the same way so no b&b arrangement.

We rented one last winter.Had bought 17heifers to go in calf and had a charlois bull.cost us 500 and we had him three months. We knew the farmer though so less risk then with a dealer. We dosed him and kept him separate for a week or so just in case. Worked out well for us but it was a once off.
