Have a metal frame bench with wooden slats which have rotted. Looking to replace said slats. Where is the best place to look, timberyard or diy type shops? Any advice on what type of wood would be best suited?

A timberyard will be cheaper than Woodies or the likes. You'll want a hardwood with strong rigidity, maybe ask the guys in the timberyard to suggest some options?
