Imported a car and didn't pay VRT

I imported a car from the UK ten years ago but never got the VRT paid on it and it was never put on the road. It has just sat in the garage.

If I want to start to use this car now what way will I proceed?

How many years is vintage/classic and isn't tax/VRT very low on such cars? Will I get to pay very little VRT or will I have to get it backdated from the date it was imported and pay the full VRT amount?

Have you got the v5 log book?

    Yes I'm fairly sure.
I would have gotten that from the dealer in UK.

This is the classic 'I bought it before it was 30 years old and sat it in the garage hoping that I'd get away with paying the large VRT on it' question I reckon....

    Great contribution thanks for that...

Assuming you have a v5 and not a cert of export, is the date of sale on it(from when you bought it originally)

Yes I have a v5- new keepers supplement.
    The date is on it.
Also have the cert of export.

    First of all four questions:

    1. What month/year is the car?

    2. What year/(date if you know it) did you import it?

    3. Is it driveable?

    4. As a matter of interest what make and model is it ? (don't answer that if you don't want to).

    To answer your questions:

Classic is 30 years of age, it goes on the date of first registration in the UK. So if it was registered on May 1st 1986 it's a classic, if it was registered on May 20th (today is the 8th) then it's not yet classic.

If it qualifies for classic VRT then it's €200. If it doesn't then it will be at least €720, possibly more depending on the value of the car.
(the bit in italics was correct the last time I imported in early 2015, but someone here will put you right if that's incorrect).

    Thanks Red Kev.

    1. The car is 1990 so it's not yet a classic thanks for the info. It may be a while yet before I do anything with it as I'm not in the country at the moment. Trying to figure out my options and then proceed from there.

    2. August 2004

    3. Not drive able presently

    4. I'd rather not say

is it registered in your name and at your address?

you'll be liable for a penalty which after some years might be quite swingeing. You'd better export if it's in your name and then get someone else to import it when you are ready to put it on the road.

Was it driveable when you imported it? If not then no VRT was then due.

You can apply for a v756 Cert of permanent export from DVLA, this will have the current date on it and use this cert to re-register it here.

Yes it is registered in my name with my home address.

It was drive able when imported.

I already went through the cert of permanent export when I originally brought then car in, even if I tell them I lost it they would have on record the previous date I'm sure so can't see how this would work?

one is in for a world of pain when one doesn't bring back the V5C in it's entirety.

The Dealer has done you no favours at all here sending it in instead of giving it to you as per the laid down instructions form the DVLA

Registered in your name at your home address? Is it registered on the V5 to a UK address? or are your Irish details just on the Permanent Export slip/piece of the V5?

red kev hits the nail on the head in response 8 above.
other answers and your statement re V5 muddy the waters a bit( for me anyway)

if you want it in for 200 euro ,wait four years.

you can get an idea of present vrt on the easy to use ros.ie website
    minimum 700 euro it seems.

in my opinion, if you fix up the car in the meantime and use it on and off over the next four years on its existing plates, i would think the chance s of you encountering any bother are about the same as a sinkhole opening up under you

    regards

    Hi rugby,

I would probably be in a position to wait out the four years. It would be at least 18 months before I would be using it anyway and that's an optimistic minimum.

Will it really be 200 euro though or will it be from the date of import that's what I am wondering or are there any other fees that may be liable and how to find out how much they could be if that's the case?

I guess the simple answer if it was going to be backdated is "sell" it to somebody in the uk and re import it again. The U.K. Has no pathetic VRT costs or other similar from what I am aware. Then the new vehicle import cert would be at that date, is this viable?

Between the few thousand euros VRT and the costs to get it to a standard of how I would like it I am trying to decide whether it may be just better to sell.

How do insurance and tax costs stack up for vintage cars?
